I want to become a society lady Rockin' a new rock?!

Flower girl dresses are some of the most fun—not to mention cutest—parts of a wedding. There are many different types of flower girl dresses, and buying one can become overwhelming. The following are the most important dos and don’ts for buying flower girl dresses that you need to keep in mind before your wedding.

Don’t: Buy material that is too hot or uncomfortable

Remember, your flower girl will be wearing this dress for a few hours, so you will want to avoid material that will become too hot or otherwise be uncomfortable.  A cranky flower girl in an itchy dress or a dress that has her complaining about the heat will definitely lead to some frustration. Instead, opt for lighter materials and make sure that if you find a dress in tulle because let’s face it all flower girls look terrific in tulle, that you buy a matching slip to keep the tulle from being an itchy nuisance.

Do: Shop online to get the best price and variety

If you’re going to buy a flower girl dress, you might be tempted to head into the nearest bridal shop. But you’ll be overpaying by a significant amount and you won’t have a great select, either. The best option is to look for flower girl dresses online, where you can get a wide variety of styles, colours and price ranges. Whatever your budget or wedding colour scheme, you are sure to find something that suits your needs and the best part it can all be done from the comfort of your own home!

Don’t: Limit yourself to all-white dresses

While many brides choose to have flower girl dresses all white to match their own, there is no reason to limit your choices to white! There are countless colours available for flower girl dresses, so you can find one that matches your wedding colours, your bridesmaids dresses, your wedding dress—or even just a dress in the favourite colour of the flower girl. Green, navy, orange, gold, even black; the options are truly endless. There are even different shade variations within each colour—such as a dark forest green or a light pastel green—so you can truly pick a colour that matches your vision for your upcoming wedding.

Do: Avoid floor length dresses in younger girls

You must remember to avoid certain flower girl dress styles depending on the age of the flower girl. If you have a younger flower girl—about 5 and younger—then you would probably prefer not to choose a floor length dress. The reason for this is that younger children are more likely to run and jump around, which will increase the chances that they might trip if they are wearing a floor length gown. They are also more likely to plop themselves on the floor which could result in a very dirty bottom half of the dress or they may even step on their long dress and rip it. Stick to tea length gowns and higher with younger flower girls.

Remember, buying a flower girl dress doesn’t have to be overwhelming! The above essential dos and don’ts will help you pick out the dress that is right for you and your flower girl. Choosing online can also help your flower girl to enjoy the shopping experience as well without them having to be dragged around to different shops.

What made the wedding special and unique?

We initially wanted our wedding to be an engagement party that turned out to be a surprise wedding for our guests. We wanted the wedding to be relaxed, informal and easy going. Unfortunately, we couldn’t stick with this initial idea. Our wedding was special and unique because we remained true to our intention. We didn’t want a big wedding with over the top elements, gifts or making it hard for our guests to get to us. We wanted to celebrate our love story – share the heart of it and celebrate why we chose each other. The day turned out to be better than we had hoped! It was small, intimate and so full of love.

Tell us about the gown and where/how you found it!

I struggled to find a gown that was perfect for me. The ONE that made me feel like I was becoming my husband’s wife. After months of searching for a light, romantic dress my mom offered to make me a dress. And it was perfect. I wore a dress that was made for me by a lady that knew me the best.

What were some touches added to make the wedding personal?

My husband and I planned the wedding together – right from the beginning. He was so present and so patient – it really contributed to my appreciation for him. From the beginning of our love story, we have been calling one another “Big Bird, Little Bird” and as a wedding stationer it was so wonderful to be able to illustrate this element into our visual (wedding stationery) love story. I was able to put my love of painting into my love of planning our wedding. The wedding stationery held the visual elements of our venue, our favourite colours, memories from our engagement and the icons that represented our nicknames for one another.

What was the most memorable part of the day?

All of it! But I definitely loved getting ready with my girls. We did our own hair and make up, we took our time, we took breaks to walk through the gardens…it felt like a fancy sleepover. I didn’t want to lose the authenticity of their personalities. They did their hair and make up the way they wanted to – and this made me so happy because the essence of our wedding was to celebrate the organic, natural way things happen.

Tell us how you met and became engaged.

Once upon a time, Matt was given a wrong number at work when he needed technical assistance – by chance it was mine. Eventually we got talking, we became friends, he bought some of my art and then we met in real life. And when I met him it was like I had known him for years. Our whole lives we have been crossing paths. We grew up a few homes from one another when we were children, we have mutual friends – but only met for the first time, by chance when we were in our mid twenties. Don’t underestimate the timing of your lives. When you are ready – you will find the love of your life.

After a few months of dating, we knew we had found “our human”. He planned a surprise weekend getaway for me at Kloofzicht in South Africa. We had never chatted about how I/he dreamt of getting engaged. But I knew I wanted to be near nature and hopefully in a hot air balloon – in the sky above the world. On the day of the engagement, we woke at 5am – to go on a hot air balloon! And it was beautiful, just like I had always dreamt of – well almost. We were unable to go in the hot air balloon as the sky was too cloudy and the nearby airport considered it a risk to fly near the planes in the fog. When we got back to our hotel, we decided to take a long walk to shake off our disappointment. We came to a bridge, surrounded by tall grass. I was taking photos of the tall, golden leaves and when I turned, Matt was on his knee with an open box showing the most beautiful ring. I still got to feel like I was in the sky above the world. And then all the tall grass around us became filled with big and little birds. It’s as if the universe was sending us confirmation of our union.

What made the wedding special and unique?

We spent the whole week with family and friends who traveled across the world to be there with us, and it was a wedding week, not just a day! It was a unique chance to bring everyone together, giving I’m from Moscow, Wayne is from Sydney (where we are living now) and we met and lived in Singapore. We also got engaged in Koh Samui and returned 8 months later to get married.

Tell us about the gown and where/how you found it!

I just fell in love with the dress on a picture and went to try it on, and it was the very first dress I tried. I got it from Moira Hughes, a boutique in Sydney. I customised the design to make the dress very my own.

What were some touches added to make the wedding personal?

The location – giving we came back to the place we got engaged. Also the music – the very iconic Australian song finished the party + Russian bride/groom entry song –  to acknowledge both home countries. The overall style – theme/colours/design – was very “us”.

What was the most memorable part of the day?

The whole day to be honest, every minute has a special place in our hearts from the get ready with our bridal party to fireworks in the end. But the moment we first saw each other is the most special one.

Tell us how you met and became engaged.

We both moved to Singapore for work and met over there in 2015.  We moved back to Sydney in July 2017 and became engaged in Koh Samui in June 2018.
