Ed and Picca’s wedding at Franciscan Gardens is full of fun details, gorgeous color, and a romantic setting that set the tone for an “epic” day! Photographer Jeremy Chou captured their incredibly beautiful images and we are so dang excited to share them with you! Get ready for detail overload!

What made the wedding special and unique?

If Ed and I could describe August 23, 2014 in one word, it would be EPic. Sharing this day with our family and friends made it that much more special for us. We love the fact that we personalized our wedding from our vows, to our first dance, to the theme, the decor and desserts, to a mini-film which told our love-story involving our family and friends. We also loved that it was an intimate setting… “Big” but small wedding.

Tell us about the gown and where/how you found it!

My bridesmaids are all from out of town. So last year during the Christmas holiday season, everyone was home visiting family. I scheduled a few trips for us in one day and it was our last stop; a trunk sale at Mariposa Boutique in Orange County. My only criteria was that I didn’t want lace and I didn’t want beading, otherwise, I tried to go in with an open mind. To be honest when I tried it on, it didn’t feel like it was IT. All of my bridesmaids loved it though! It wasn’t until I face-timed with my mom and saw her reaction. After that, I knew it was the one. An off-white lace overlay made of tulle and hints of beading by Pronovias. It was simply perfect, and funny how I walked out of there and fell in love with what I originally didn’t want. The best part about it!? The price tag–waaaaay under budget.

What were some touches added to make it personal?

We wanted to share our love-story with our guests from the get-go. From there, I “ran-away” with a love-story theme and DIY’d the decor: Escort library cards filed in card catalog boxes I purchased from Marshall’s, hand-made bookmark place cards, book centerpieces spray painted in gold, tables numbered by chapters, chalk board signs (with the help of another DIY bride, Alyssa) and a dessert library with all home-made treats/desserts (including our cake and cake topper) made by friends and family! We had one of Edward’s friend since 7th grade perform an acoustic version of one of our favorite songs of 2014, “Latch,” by Sam Smith and our cousins Ricky and Christine of The Yodsukars also produced a mini-film of our love-story of how we met. When I asked my little nieces and nephew what their favorite part of the wedding was, they said “When we watched the movie.” For the bridesmaids, I wanted each of them to be different to show their individuality but at the same time I wanted them to be comfortable in the dress that they were wearing. I gave them a color palette and allowed them to choose their own dresses. All different styles but complimentary in color.

What was the most memorable part of the day?

Can I say ALL OF IT!?! Since then, we can’t stop thinking about our wedding day. We’ve watched the videos and looked through photos taken by guests over and over!! We miss it so so much!! But if we were to choose, it was our ceremony. For me particularly, it was the part where Edward said his vows.

Tell us how you met and became engaged.

We met at The Bonaventure Hotel in DTLA at a New Year’s Eve party through mutual friends. He was the first person I met shortly after the stroke of midnight. That evening, we sat in the hotel lobby in front of a water fountain away from the noise and had a great conversation. I got cold and Ed gave me his sweater which I ended up “stealing” that night in hopes that I would see him again. It was returned on our first date and the rest was history… On our 3rd-year anniversary, he took me back to the same exact spot where we met/talked on that one New Year’s night and that’s where he asked me to be his wife. He read a letter that he wrote prior to getting down on one knee, this letter was also featured in our mini love-story film.

What made the wedding special and unique?
K&T – When we started planning our wedding we knew right away that we didn’t want to get married in a church. Neither one of us are religious, but we are spiritual. We were honored to have our close friend John O’Connell be our officiant. We chose a location nearby which set the back drop for our Spanish/Italian wedding. We wanted it to be a celebration of friends, family, and love. Also, our dog, Phil, made an appearance as the ring bearer. He was a big hit.

Tell us about the dress and where/how you found it!
K – I had no idea what I wanted, but I knew I wanted something with lace. I tried on quite a few dresses the first outing, but didn’t quite find the one. It was on my second dress shopping day we decided to go to Panache in Pasadena. I walked in and was quite overwhelmed with so many beautiful gowns. At first I didn’t think I was going to find my dress, but there it was, peeking out from the window from which it stood on display. All I could really see was the ruffling train flowing over the edge of the stoop and the special details on the back bodice. I knew I had to try it on. It was the first dress I tried on at Panache that day and immediately I knew it was the dress. The dress is designed by Lazaro and has so many special details I couldn’t have dreamt for a more special dress.

What were some touches added to make it personal?
K – Tony and I are designers who love all things natural and slightly rustic. We wanted to do something that expressed our aesthetic and who we are. Tony, being a graphic designer, pretty much designed everything – from the invitations to a special wax seal which united both our initials. We kept it simple and the color palette minimal only using black, white, natural, the colors found in succulents and the softest peony pinks.

What was the most memorable part of the day?
K – It’s so hard to pick one thing!! To be honest for me it was hearing Tony say his vows to me. The whole day was just so fantastic. Having so many friends and family with us here in LA.
T – Seeing Kathleen walk down the aisle towards me, looking absolutely beautiful. The reception was a blast, too. It was great having all of our favorite people in one room, cutting loose. The whole day was memorable.

Tell us how you met and became engaged!
T – We met in Savannah, Georgia at Savannah College of Art and Design. Immediately there was a connection and we couldn’t stop talking about dreams, art, pets, friends. I proposed at sunset on a small beach on Catalina Island. It’s beautiful and only a boat ride from LA. A funny thing happened earlier in the day. We went para-sailing and Kathleen’s a little scared of heights. She wasn’t sure that she wanted to go up in the sky. The boat captain (who was joking with her up to that point) got super serious and fatherly. He reassured her that she was completely safe. Of course, once we got into the sky, she loved it and was beaming. When we came back down the captain announced that he was retiring and that it was his last day on the job. He shook my hand and very seriously said “Take care of her.” It was like he somehow knew I had the ring in my pocket.

Most of their guests traveled for the big day, so special welcome bags (that the pair printed on their own using a Gocco printer!) were a special touch. What made the wedding special and unique?

The wedding was based in York Beach, Maine, a town where I spent many summers at my grandparents’ house, and it was so fantastic to share York with all my friends and Jason’s family. Since most people had to travel to get there, Jason and I spent countless hours Gocco-printing welcome bags to show our appreciation. I still see my friends carrying their “York Beach” totes today!

I loved the selection at Birnbaum and Bullock, and I especially loved the salon itself — very intimate. Some of the stores were just so chaotic and impersonal, it made the experience way less special. I kept gravitating toward any dress that wasn’t white or ivory—and this antique pink one at B&B was just everything.

What were some touches added to make it personal?

We had the harpist play “Ceremony” by New Order/Joy Division as we walked down the aisle as husband and wife. I could hardly hear it at the time because it was all so overwhelming, but it gives me goosebumps still every time I hear it now picturing that moment in time. (Similarly, we requested that the DJs play “Otis” by Kanye West/Jay Z at the reception when we entered the room—that doesn’t quite give me goosebumps now, but it certainly makes me giggle.)

What was the most memorable part of the day?

During the ‘twilight hour,’ our photographer Shannen got us out on golf carts around the grounds of our venue (which was a golf course and event room) for a last round of portraits. It was so relaxing to take a break from the limelight and just enjoy some quiet time with Jason.

We’ll always have Scott Dadich (editor of WIRED magazine) to thank for introducing us! Our companies (Martha Stewart and Adobe) were partnered to bring magazines on to the iPad, so Jason came to one of our industry events, where Scott introduced us. Almost two years later, Jason popped open some Dom Perignon and gave me my great-grandmother’s diamond ring that he had repaired and improved upon.

Morgan wanted to keep her wedding very traditional, but there were SO many cute ideas that she LOVED, so when it came to planning the bridesmaid luncheon, Angela of Angela Marie Events decided a mini-soiree would be the perfect time to have tons of fun and pull out all the stops for an ultra glamorous event. Angela told us, “Her aunt and I decided that this would be a great chance to raid Morgan’s Pinterest account and incorporate all those cute pins she loved!”

The luncheon fully sparkled from the glasses, to the runners, to the desserts. Angela also incorporated her grandmother’s china, which was a surprise! Each maid had a super cute bag from Wedding Chicks full of goodies from the bride. The coral peonies were gorgeous with David Austin roses, hydrangeas, and other beautiful pink florals!Wedding Blog Glam Southern Bridesmaid Luncheon Wedding Blog Glam Southern Bridesmaid Luncheon Wedding Blog Glam Southern Bridesmaid Luncheon Wedding Blog Glam Southern Bridesmaid Luncheon Wedding Blog Glam Southern Bridesmaid Luncheon Wedding Blog Glam Southern Bridesmaid Luncheon Wedding Blog Glam Southern Bridesmaid Luncheon Wedding Blog Glam Southern Bridesmaid Luncheon Wedding Blog Glam Southern Bridesmaid Luncheon Wedding Blog Glam Southern Bridesmaid Luncheon Wedding Blog Glam Southern Bridesmaid Luncheon Wedding Blog Glam Southern Bridesmaid Luncheon

A gold fringe backdrop with hearts hung with gold twine was displayed behind the desserts, while tassels from Snooty Blooms hung in front of the drink table. The southern tradition of “cake pulls” were incorporated into the cake with a topper by Proper Prints that said, “Love my ladies” and the cake backdrop was full of homemade tissue flowers and paper poms. Each guest enjoyed a St. Germain cocktail for cocktail hour and then enjoyed a tasty cup of shrimp and corn soup, a choice of a salad, and many sweets to nibble on–perfect southern inspired treats for this southern bride.

Each girl was amazed at the details of the event and each kept saying “this luncheon is SOOOO Morgan!”

Jessica and Arthur are a world travelers who have lived all over the globe. Their love story is an unlikely one, involving a chance meeting, thousands of frequent flier miles, medical school, and a move across the world! Their gorgeous wedding in sunny Florida was an opportunity to invite friends and family from far ends of the earth to join in one place for the celebration of marriage. We absolutely love Jessica and Arthur’s story, as told by the bride, and shot by the ever so amazing photographer, Justin DeMutiis.

Wedding Blog Jessica and Arthurs International Love Story

What made the wedding special and unique?

We wanted a unique, special wedding to match our non-traditional story. Arthur and I met five years ago on Koh Tao, a small island off the coast of Thailand. I was backpacking around the world before starting medical school and had been away from home for almost five months. Arthur, who was a paratrooper in the British Army at the time, was on leave from a tour of duty in Afghanistan. He was on a quick jaunt to Thailand, traveling with another soldier (who would later be our best man). We met, hit it off, and told one another that we’d try to stay in touch, even though I lived in New York City and Arthur’s home base was in Wales, UK. He visited New York City seven months later after he returned safely from Afghanistan, and the rest was history. Three years, hundreds of thousands of frequent flier miles, and an uncountable number of Skype calls later, Arthur left the army and moved to NYC, where I was finishing up medical school. Eight months later, he took me to a hidden, secret beach on a northern corner of Manhattan – that reminded us both of Koh Tao – dropped down to one knee in the rain, told me how nervous he had been for months thinking of this moment, and proposed. My answer, of course, was yes.

Tell us about the gown and where/how you found it!

One of my favorite parts of planning was anything that had to do with fashion. My bridesmaids all loved their long Jenny Yoo dresses in hues of dusky purples and blues, and I thought they looked incredible. My Anna Maier – Ulla Maija gown was actually the second I tried on, and although I tried on a few dozen more after it, I should have just stopped then because I knew nothing was going to top it! Since my gown had champagne silk tones and a more sleek silhouette rather than the typical wedding gown, I chose a cathedral length veil with a blusher to make it feel a bit more bridal for the walk down the aisle. I also added a Jenny Packham headpiece for some vintage flair, and for jewelry I wore a ring that has been in Arthur’s family since the turn of the 20th century, as well as diamond art deco drop earrings from the 1930s that I found last-minute in an antique market in Buenos Aires. Arthur had a suit custom-made from Bindle and Keep, a haberdasher in Brooklyn, NY, and our groomsmen wore Zara suits. The ties were a very last minute find, and a total steal, from Dessy.

What were some touches added to make it personal?

Despite us both having roots all over the world, Florida was the natural choice for our wedding. We both have family there, and it’s where I grew up. When we first started planning our wedding, we sat down and talked about the things that were most important to us. First, we wanted all of our guests to have a stand-out, amazing time. Second, we wanted our loved ones to walk away from the night thinking that the wedding really “felt” like us as a couple. We had a blast planning and were very involved in every decision. We hand-picked (and, in some cases, chased down by calling alcohol distributers in multiple states) the craft beer, wine, and liquor, pulling from our favorite microbreweries and from wine regions where we’d traveled together. We both love food and wanted whatever we served to be memorable, so we worked with our caterer to create a unique but crowd-pleasing menu, including a nod to where we met (pad-thai noodles in takeout containers as one of our appetizers).

When it came to dinner, we wanted an intimate, festive, rustic vibe. I found these fantastic banquet-style farmhouse tables from a company that specializes in vintage furniture. They had made the tables out of repurposed farm wood from Tennessee. The meal courses were all served family-style on big platters, so that everyone would hopefully bond as they shared. And since Arthur has a big sweet tooth, we had to have an epic dessert bar, including mini-tiramisuis in mason jars, cookies and milk, a self-serve Irish coffee bar, and a delicious cake topped by our “spirit animals”- a dolphin and a bear. We also truly believe a good band playing live music is the most fun dance setting, so right after we got engaged we quickly booked a popular Florida band – and sure enough, they were a huge hit at the wedding, with everyone from grandparents to groomsmen hitting the dance floor.

After the reception we ushered our guests to a bar down the street for the after party, where everyone from our groomsmen to grandparents partied the night away and continued the epic celebration.

What was the most memorable part of the day?

When it came to the details and decorations, I had a strong vision of what I wanted and wasn’t afraid to push for it. Fortunately, I worked with amazing vendors and a great wedding planner who were totally game to step outside the box, even when it sounded a little crazy – like when I kept wanting the flower arrangements to be “more weedy” or when I requested that the catering staff wear jeans and suspenders to add a bit of hipster flair! When we saw it all come together on our wedding day, everything looked exactly how I’d envisioned it, and I couldn’t have been happier.

Tell us how you met and became engaged.

Arthur and I met on the road, and travel has been a very important part of our lives as both a couple and individuals, so we weaved in a travel theme. Guests put cards in a vintage suitcase and signed a globe instead of a guestbook. Under the guidance of our officiant, Arthur and I wrote our entire ceremony ourselves, including a passage using travel as a metaphor for our relationship. Writing the ceremony was definitely the hardest thing we did for the wedding, but it turned out to be one of the most special parts of the day. Standing up in front of our friends and families, hearing words we had carefully and lovingly written to give our loved ones a context for our relationship – future, present, and past – was one of the most special moments of my life. We received dozens of compliments from our guests on the heartfelt, personalized ceremony, including the cheesy parts – such as a Nuremburg wedding cup that we drank out of simultaneously, as the legend required, and the exchange of Welsh love spoons, which was the first gift Arthur ever gave me.
