It’s sweet moments like these that you’ll cherish long after your wedding. We asked bride Cori Johnson to tell us the story behind today’s “Caught in the Moment” photo, captured by JoPhoto.

This is my maternal Grandmother Sue Ballinger. This was the first time she had seen me all day and it was right after I had gotten dressed and was getting ready to walk out. My mom went to get her and bring her in to the dressing room so she could see me with my dress on , hair done, etc.

As soon as she walked in she began crying! I think I was cracking a joke about her crying the first time she saw me. She said she was crying because I looked so beautiful! She was so proud of me and happy to see me getting ready to get married. I am her oldest grandchild and the only girl so I’m sure seeing me about to get married had something to do with her emotions. Also…the women in our family, including my grandmother and myself, aren’t that great at concealing our emotions so crying is a natural reaction to everything, including overwhelming joy!

I love her and this picture! It reminds me of how happy not only myself and my husband were on that day, but how happy our families were to become part of each other! It was the most perfect day ever!

Lacy and Mark were married in an intimate early evening ceremony held at the Chouse in Norman, Oklahoma.  The Chouse is now a privately owned home, but was originally the St. Thomas More University Parish attended by the groom as a boy. The highlight of the ceremony was the giving of rings, when the groom surprised the bride by presenting her with a beautiful and unexpected pear shaped diamond ring in addition to her channel set engagement band that she had intended to wear as her wedding ring.  Not a dry eye in the house and an audible gasp from the bride!

Lindsay, of Gibson Events and the bride Lacy worked together to design the reception in a working greenhouse. Guests were welcomed down a lantern lit path into the greenhouse.  A labyrinth like space that was filled to the brim with nooks and crannies of fountains, Koi ponds and romantic seating areas where guests could almost slip away unnoticed.  Of the approximately 5,000 square feet of indoor space only about 40% was usable for guest seating, food/bar service and dancing.  With a little ingenuity Lindsay and the vendor team made use of every available space! “The magical feeling was palpable,” said their photographer, Aaron Snow.

Tell us about your vision for the big day!

I had been introduced to Lindsay Gibson previously and knew I wanted her to be the director guiding our vision. Before meeting with her I looked on her blog and fell for a small scale promotional photo shoot she had done at an awesome old Greenhouse in Oklahoma City. Our meeting was simple, I showed her the pictures and said, “please make this happen for us.” We quickly began brainstorming over venues that would serve as our inspiration. After a trip to the Greenhouse in Norman, Lindsay’s wheels began spinning and soon she had us convinced. Lindsay pulled together vendors and resources from previous associations.

What was your most memorable part of the day?

Mark arranged a breakfast for all the women in both families on the morning of the wedding.  It was the perfect calming and peaceful experience I needed before the busyness of the day set in.
Lindsay and our photographer, Aaron, arranged for us to do our first look at the Greenhouse so that we could see it before the guests arrived and because it was an amazing backdrop for photos with not an ugly view in sight!  I was so nervous and second guessing the idea of slipping into my gown in the back room of a garden center, but the moment Mark turned around and I saw his reaction I thought, “Yes, this is right, this is awesome, this is exactly what we wanted, now let’s have a party!”.

What are some personal details you added to make the wedding unique?

Tons of heirlooms, including: The flower girl basket — same basket used at my parent’s wedding, handkerchief I carried–my grandmother’s “something old”, I wore my Grandmother’s wedding ring for “something borrowed”, and the earrings my parent’s gave me were my “something new”.

How did you meet and become engaged?

Our story starts in 2007 when I was an intern at the company that Mark worked for. As we reflect on our history together he shares how he was really impressed with my passion, enthusiasm, commitment, and drive to the job. Immediately after my internship I went abroad and studied in Italy. Due to the connection we made I frequently contacted Mark while overseas to share my experiences. When I came back to the United States I started working for the same company that Mark worked for in 2009. Within a year Mark decided to take a chance and ask me out on a date. I refused at first. However that did not diffuse Mark’s feelings he had developed for me. After a month of persistent romantic gestures I agreed to go on a date with him. We went to Othello’s in Norman and what I thought would be a quick dinner turned into a three hour intimate conversation. After that dinner Mark and I were inseparable. Before knew it the first chapter of our love story lasted 3 years. Mark proposed to me on the anniversary of our first date on a surprise trip to New York City. It wasn’t long before we settled on a wedding date and began the planning.

They planned an incredibly romantic and spiritual ceremony that held a deep sense of tradition and meaning, and afterward hosted family and friends at Country Club of Virginia for a gorgeous reception with plenty of dancing, thanks to the James Brown cover band, The Big Payback, they hired! We focused on making the service personal (the service was very important to us and was the one part of the wedding day that no one in our family knew about or could offer their opinion on). One special detail about the service was the breathtaking music by our incredibly talented musician friends (to whom we gave very little direction). Also, since we are both really into music, we spent a while searching for the perfect reception band – which ended up being a James Brown cover band made up of local musicians. They rocked and got everyone – young, old, black, white, northerners, southerners – dancing their faces off. What made the wedding special and unique?

Making our wedding unique was our main goal when we began planning our big day. We searched for a venue for months and were on the verge of giving up for a year or so when one of our best friends suggested we have a look at a property her parent’s owned in regional New Zealand. Luckily, it was perfect! Surrounded by rolling hills, and encased in vineyards, they owned a teeny tiny reconsecrated church perched on the top of a hill. We think the location of the wedding was what made it especially unique!

Tell us about your gown and where/how you found it!

I found my dress by absolute fate! I knew exactly what I wanted but couldn’t find it anywhere. One of my beautiful friends was studying design at university in Dunedin and was helping me find something. Perchance one of her fellow students designed and made the dress of my dreams for her own personal final collection at Fashion School. The dress was perfect and just what I was looking for!

What were some touches added to make it personal?

Every single detail represented Nathan and I perfectly. That was the fun part; organizing a day that was all about us, as individuals as well as a couple. Styling and decorating our venue was one of our favourite parts of organizing our wedding. Nathan and I have very similar style and tastes so it was lots of fun putting our ideas together and making them a reality. We decided we would try our hardest to make every one of our ideas a reality, which meant a lot of planning as well as a number of logistical nightmares, but we did it! We bought most of our decorations while we were in South East Asia and had them shipped to NZ including the lightshades over the trestle tables, metres and metres of plain coloured bunting and 4 kilometres (2.5 miles!) of ribbon that we used to make the ribbon wall behind the head table. Nathan’s 94 year old grandmother sewed 250 metres of bunting from old material she had collected, the bunting is something that will stay in our family forever and means so much to us. She and Nathan’s mum also grew all of the flowers that lined the trestle tables and decorated the church. Before we moved from New Zealand we spent every weekend for months going to garage sales and op shops collecting old bottles, and we were lucky enough to find a couple who were selling their 500 piece collection of antique pharmaceutical and milk bottles. All of the love and work that was put into every aspect of the wedding made it personal!

What was the most memorable part of the day?

Wow, there were so many memorable moments! Little memories are still popping into our heads as the days go by. We stayed at our wedding with some of our closest friends and family until just before the sun came up, and had to walk the 3 kilometres home (just under 2 miles), and during our walk reality hit us; we realized that we had just pulled off a wedding in a paddock that had no electricity, running water or toilets. That was a very special and rewarding moment.

Tell us how you met/proposed!

We met through mutual friends while we were both studying at Victoria University, in Wellington, in 2008. Nathan proposed while we were sailing down the coast of Thailand with Molly’s parents. He proposed on a small beach on the island Ko Phayam. It was casual and sweet, we do don’t romantics very well!

What made the wedding special and unique?
We spent a long time thinking about and visiting venues in our current city, Brooklyn, as well as in my home town of Charlottesville, VA; we even flirted with the idea of a tropical destination. However, once we visited Pippin Hill Farm & Vineyards in Charlottesville, we couldn’t settle on having the wedding anywhere else. The sweeping Blue Ridge mountain view, delicious food, and elegant reception area were perfect. Even though we ended up having the wedding in the semi destination of Charlottesville, we were thrilled to have so many friends and family travel from all over the world to celebrate with us, joining us from South America, the South West, and the North East.

One thing that was important to me was to make sure to incorporate my family’s cultural traditions from Brazil throughout the day. For example, we found an AMAZING local bossa nova band (Quatro na Bossa) who filled the summer air with classic Brazilian jazz during the cocktail and dinner. Our minister, my husband’s childhood pastor and who traveled from Connecticut to officiate the ceremony, was kind enough to learn a few Portuguese phrases so that my non-English speaking family could understand some of the ceremony. Additionally, rather than the American tradition of “his vs. hers” bridesmaids and groomsman, we used the Latin American tradition of Padrinhos as the bridal party. We chose 6 married couples, our friends and family members whose marriages we look up to, to stand with us and provide blessings. Lastly, my mom, aunt and grandmother meticulously baked 500 varied truffles (docinhos) made from chocolate, coconut, peanut, and walnut, a tradition no Brazilian celebration would go without.

Tell us about your gown and where/how you found it!
When I started on my gown hunt I was on a mission to find a cap-sleeve, fitted, lace dress. After a very long search, I was finally convinced by my dear friends to try on this beautiful Elizabeth Dye gown (Tempest) at Lovely Bridal in NYC. I fell in love with it’s romantic simplicity. It’s subtle two-tones (top is white while the skirt off-white) made me feel like it was just enough of a non-traditional look for me.

What were some touches added to make it personal?
We had many talented friends and family contribute to DIY details that made our wedding very personal and one of a kind. Our friend, and bridesmaid, made the bridesmaids clutches that we used in place of bouquets. We had a fun time shopping for the leather and hardware in NYC’s garment district a few months before the wedding. Since the girls wore their own choice of dress, the matching clutches helped to add some cohesion to their looks while still giving them the flexibility of being comfortable in their own choice of style. My 88 year old Great Aunt lovingly hand stitched my veil and also made the sweet flower girl headpiece. Though she couldn’t make the trip from Brazil, it was fun to share Sera Petra’s beautiful photos with her.

My husband, the architect, is definitely the more creative and crafty between the two of us and he played a much larger role in the details than most grooms do. He really stepped it up by making our gorgeous welcome sign, by pulling together the salvaged windows listing our guests’ table assignments which we surrounded with photos of our parents and grandparents on their wedding days, and by creating our awesome vintage-style post card table markers featuring places we visited or lived together as a couple.

Finally, though not a DIY project, I was so honored to have two meaningful “something borroweds:” I wore my paternal grandmother’s vintage earrings and my maternal grandmother’s antique necklace – the same one she wore on her wedding day 67 years earlier!

What was the most memorable part of the day?
By far the most memorable part of the wedding day was when the dark storm clouds starting rolling in, in the middle of our outdoor, un-tented ceremony. I think all our guests were anxious for the pastor to wrap things up when without a minute to spare, the rain came down just as we were pronounced and kissed! Our much rehearsed exit the day before went by the way side and everyone ran for cover. The clouds and rain made for some fun photos as well as heat and comic relief. And of course a little rain on your wedding day is always seen as good luck!

Tell us how you met/proposed!
We met on a blind date at a cozy Turkish Wine bar on a Tuesday evening in Union Square, NY where he very sweetly brought me back to 4 years later the day before Valentine’s day (again a Tuesday night) to propose.

What made the wedding special and unique?
We felt blessed to be able to spend the entire weekend with our guests in such a special place. It was so important to us that our guests have a great weekend and we couldn’t think of a better place to bring together our friends and family. We knew some of our guests would be traveling far to come to our wedding and we wanted to bring them together in a place that was special to us. Nantucket was a place where we knew we could create great memories with our guests.

What were some touches added to make it personal?
We asked Sarah Swain if she would play at our wedding after hearing her play many times at one of our favorite places on the Cape, the Harvest Gallery Wine Bar. Music is important to us and we wanted to have a band that reflected that – we have enjoyed listening to Sarah many times and we loved having the opportunity to share that with our friends and family.

What was the most memorable part of the day?
When everyone ran out to watch the sunset we had a moment when we were able to look around and at each other and take in how beautiful everything looked. We felt so lucky to have everyone together that day. It was such a beautiful day to be on the beach and we had a perfect gorgeous sunset to take us into the evening.
