As far as romantic beach weddings go, it does not get more sweet than this very intimate affair on Summerland beach. After exchanging vows, the couple immediately hit the edge of the surf to soak in (literally) their newly married status. If you are looking for absolute adventure, check out how this couple planned a New Zealand elopement. Their ceremony location on a local summit required a helicopter escort–talk about an adventurous walk down the aisle! These serene images were shot by Kate MacPherson. Our favorite post-elopement toast was from this San Francisco ceremony. After exchanging vows before the Justice of the Peace, the couple made their way downtown to a favorite local pub for a round of drinks with their small handful of attendees. Images by JB Reed.

The absolute best elopement dress, which we think reflects the spontaneity and whimsy of last minute nuptials is Magalie and Mike’s wedding that was planned in EIGHT…that’s right, EIGHT days. San Francisco City Hall is the most iconic venue for romantic elopements. There’s so much history, tradition, and grand architecture that rivals some of the world’s best wedding venues. Oh yeah. We were so happy that we chose to have our wedding on Martha’s Vineyard.  Ben and I spent a lot of time in Martha’s Vineyard since we met and we kept throwing the idea in the mix, but it would get tossed aside because of logistics. One day we decided that we were just going to take weekend trip there, meet with vendors and see where it brought us. As with every other trip there, as soon as we stepped off the ferry, we just felt so relaxed and knew that is how we wanted to feel on our wedding day. Most of our family came down the week before the wedding so it was just really great to get to spend extra time with all the people closest to us before the actual wedding day. None of it would have been possible without their help and we can’t thank everyone enough for being there with us! We really wanted something different and non-traditional. We couldn’t have been happier that we chose to get married in Edgartown!

My favorite moment of the day was our “first look”.  My dad and I went out on his boat for a spin around the harbor and Ben met us at the dock. My dad and I got to have a nice talk and the boat ride totally relaxed me. Then, seeing Ben standing at the end of the dock just made my day!

A lot of our elements were DIY, I hand letter pressed our save the dates, my brother and grandmother made our cake toppers, and we enlisted our friends to help with our favors, but the biggest and most memorable was my dress. My mom made my dress! When we started dress shopping, I was looking at pretty simple dresses and my mom would joke “I could make that”. So one day as I was looking through blogs I saw a dress that I loved and sent it to my mom (completely as a joke, because it looked way too hard to make) and said “think you could make this?” and she said, “sure, why not?” I laughed, but she wasn’t kidding! She had to make a few mock ups with different fabrics until I found one I liked, but throughout the whole process my mom remained relaxed and calm (even when I decided to move 3000 miles away from her before the dress was complete) and that’s how I ended up with the best dress ever!!

Second, to ensure every gentleman is readily prepared, our new found friends at Launderette have also provided a video tutorial. This video involves French and humor–so don’t let the word tutorial fool you into fearing boredom and resisting the urge to press play. We promise, you’ll love it…even if you are a lady without need for tying bows like a man. But we’ve already said too much. We thought we’d let Launderette make the proper (and more apt) introductions below.

With so many, quite serviceable, bow tie videos out there, we knew ours had to be something unique. So in homage to our favorite new wave auteurs, we put together a how-to film with a french twist. It figures Cahiers would have wanted you to know how to get these things around your necks as much as we do.

We hope this inspires a few of you to maybe try an alternative to your bolo. Rest assured, with a little practice it’s as easy as tying your shoes.

And, my sweet Tennessee brides, were you wondering how this wedding got so pretty? You ought to call of the lovely Mary Alice of A Delightful Day. Her event design savvy helped put all of this together!

I love what photographer Ali shared about her bride and groom: Natalie and Conar were married in the town Natalie grew up in — Gallatin, Tennesse — and it had the best small town charm, just like you’d expect. They had quite honestly one of the most gorgeous fall days you could ask for, and filled the tiny downtown chapel at dusk with their dearest friends and family. One of my favorite moments of the day was getting to witness Conar open up the gift his bride gave him moments before their first look… a set of embroidered handkerchiefs. That sweet token, along with a handwritten note made all of us stop and simply take it all all in. After all the “big” things have been planned on a wedding day, I always find that it’s usually about the love in the little things that become so very meaningful…

We wanted our wedding to showcase our personalities – we’re total tech dorks. Ryan works at Twitter and most of our friends are in the tech space as well. Our programs and menus had everything listed by Twitter handles and our name cards were also by twitter usernames. Our favors table had #love in large wooden letters. The overall look and feel was supposed to be relaxed and very New England. Nothing too fancy–simple hydrangeas and snowbells (in lieu of lily of the valleys) were our main flowers and linens were kept very natural as well as the rustic chairs. We wanted people to be comfortable but to see a rustic elegance. In order to make our guests feel welcome we did welcome boxes with Ryan’s family recipe of homemade chex mix and salt water taffy from Maine.

Ryan and I are both transplants to Northern California and we wanted our wedding to reflect where we came from, him from Michigan and myself from Maine. We flew in Lobster Bisque from our favorite restaurant in my hometown. We ended the meal with white chocolate covered cherries from Michigan. The highlight of the menu was our favors–whoopie pies–a Maine staple that were handcrafted by one of our favorite food carts in San Francisco that encompassed our two homestates. Steven, the vendor and our dear friend tells the story of the Matching Half Gobs on his blog here!

Also at the ceremony we had our french bulldog, Stella, as the best dog, who despite being very well behaved generally attempted to pull my dress off mid-vows. Our ceremony was also officiated by one of our best friends. We wrote our own vows that not only reflected our love but also our dorky sense of humor and love of tech.
