Melissa and Eric are a southern couple living and working in New York City, so when it came to their wedding, the pair hosted family and friends at Belfair Plantation in South Carolina for a modern take on a traditional southern wedding. With a fresh black and white palette, this wedding is the perfect NYC meets South party! We absolutely adore the simple elegant floral details by Fern Studio Floral & Event Design all shot by Landon Jacob.

What made the wedding special and unique?

Our location! We were married under a canopy of live oak trees called the avenue of the oaks located on the Belfair Plantation in South Carolina. The street was closed off and guests were driven up to the avenue by Trolley.

My parents had moved to Belfair in November, 2013 and Eric and I immediately knew that was the place we wanted to get married.  I am definitely a home body, so the back yard wedding in The Father of the Bride would be my ideal wedding venue.  This came very close to it with everything we wanted, a beautiful setting with an at home feel.

Tell us about the dress and where/how you found it!

Saying yes to the dress was by far the most difficult decision I had to make! I never envisioned myself in a wedding dress so I had no idea what fit or material I wanted. I flew down from NYC to Charleston and visited Maddison Row for my first appointment. I felt so comfortable there and tried on dozens of dresses.  I ended up leaving without a dress even though I liked so many.  I was told that I shouldn’t just like the dress, I have to love it!  I went to 10 other stores over the next month back in NYC, and flew back down to Madison Row to pick the one.  I tried on a Romona Keveza Alecon lace dress that had a trumpet fit with just enough tool on the bottom to add some shape but not overpower me.  I knew it was a good sign when there was nothing I wanted to change about the dress and I loved it. I went with a long Vera Wang tool veil to add a little bit of NYC to my southern dress.

What were some touches added to make it personal?

I planned the entire wedding myself (no wedding planner for me!), from booking all of the vendors, to designing our wedding logo, to timeline creation, and making all décor decisions. Everything that went into the weekend was personal to Eric and I. The décor was white and cream with a touch of black as an accent color, exactly what our apartment and my wardrobe looks like.  We took our engagement pictures in NYC where we live and used the photos as our table numbers to add some NYC to our southern wedding.

The rehearsal dinner was on Hilton Head Island, on the water.  Guests were greeted with sweat tea vodka cocktails with beverage napkins that said ‘put some south in your mouth’.  The bridesmaids got ready in jcrew monogrammed night shirts at the brides parents’ house.  The groomsmen gift was Sperry boat shoes, the grooms favorite. Majority of the guests stayed on Belfair grounds in the cottages where we delivered ‘welcome down south’ welcome bags with gluten free goodies.

What was the most memorable part of the day?

Aside from our first look and amazing ceremony, I think seeing everything all come together and look so beautiful was really memorable to me.  I remember walking into the reception room before the guests had arrived, and feeling so happy that it was everything I had envisioned and could ever want.

Tell us how you met and became engaged.

Eric and I met in middle school and quickly became best friends.  We officially started dating our senior year of high school and have been inseparable since. We were visiting my parents in South Carolina the weekend Eric proposed.  It was around sunset when my family spontaneously decided to go out to the 3rd hole on the golf course right behind our house to play a quick tournament.  While everyone was walking to the hole I saw Eric standing underneath a tree by himself.   I walked under to see what he was doing and as he told me to look at the names that were engraved in the trunk, I turned around and he was on one knee. My family was watching and had bottles of champagne popped ready to celebrate. The massive oak he was standing under is called the wedding tree.  It has split down the middle, grown in different directions, but remains as one at the trunk.

What made the wedding special and unique?

Wow. I think what made it most special was that it was a destination for almost all guests. Joanne is from Chicago and Kieran is from Ireland, but Joanne’s mom lives in Siesta Key. We had spent many wonderful vacations in the area and it just felt right for our wedding day. We even decided this while still in Verona – as soon as we got back to Dublin, Joanne booked a trip to Sarasota with her sisters to start looking at venues.

Even though having a destination wedding meant that not all of our guests could come in the end, it meant that we had an entire week with our best friends in the world. People flew in from Bujumbura, Burundi, and Melbourne, Australia, as well as Chicago and Ireland, and it really was the most special week of our lives. We wouldn’t change a thing!

Tell us about the gown and where/how you found it!

I bought the gown at La Mariee in Sarasota. I was visiting with my mom and sister and was just beginning the process of looking at dresses. I really wasn’t planning on buying one at the time, but after trying on this one I couldn’t stop thinking about it. About an hour before I had to leave for my flight back to Dublin I went back to the store, tried it on one last time, and then knew for sure it was it!

About four or five months later an amazing surprise happened with the dress – when it arrived into the shop it was in two pieces, but in a good way! Little did I (or the bridal boutique) know that the bottom half of the dress unbuttoned from underneath and it became a short dress for later on – perfect for dancing in the Florida heat!

What were some touches added to make it personal?

I really spent a lot of time when we got engaged thinking about how I wanted the wedding to feel. I knew I wanted it to be an inclusive, casual, yet formal, event – a laid back attitude with a classic vibe. One of the key things to this was our tablescape – it was important to me that everyone felt part of the day and the event, so we had double-long tables and no head table in a U-shape around the dance floor. Combined with family-style food (not buffet, but passed platters) it really felt like a big family get together.

We also had a really unique ceremony. Because it was a non-church ceremony, it meant we had TONS of flexibility in what happened in our ceremony. Our wonderful friend, Andrew Hoyt, officiated and provided the most personal, loving ceremony. We had seven friends do readings, including some written by the groom himself. The whole event was super personal, super loving, and super us. We wouldn’t have had it any other way!

Finally, just the colors were so special – I wanted everything to be vibrant and fun and really reflect the botanical gardens. Hot pinks and oranges up against that green – stunning! I loved it. Plus, how can you go wrong with an unofficial flamingo theme?!

What was the most memorable part of the day?

The first moments after the ceremony but before the cocktail hour were just magical. We had come through this totally amazing, personal ceremony, with lots of laughs and lots of tears, and just felt like a whooshing rush of love afterwards. We actually couldn’t stop laughing because we were so darn happy! It was the best moment of the entire day to look at each other and feel, “That’s it. We did it!” Pure magic. There is actually a photo that captures this where we’re both laughing and so, so happy.

Tell us how you met and became engaged.

We met in 2003 while Masters students in the Centre for the Environment at Trinity College Dublin. When Joanne moved to Dublin to do her masters and she distinctly remembers telling her mother that “she wouldn’t date anyone because she’d be studying too hard.” Little did she know that about three weeks later she’d be going on her first date with Kieran…he took her to an Asian fusion restaurant in Dublin and the rest is history!
About four months in to dating, Joanne had a little medical scare and wound up in St. Vincent’s Hospital for a few nights. Kieran was there by her side for every possible minute (bringing her chips and grapes and all sorts of treats!) and for both it really was a defining time in the relationship. It took a while, though, to get from there to popping the question…ten short years!

Joanne took Kieran to Verona, Italy, for his birthday in April 2013, but little did she know he was actually planning on proposing on that trip!

It was a rainy evening in Verona, about the third night there. After probably the least exciting dinner of the trip, they were walking back towards the hotel when Kieran turned towards Joanne and swiftly got down on one knee. Joanne didn’t really know what was happening when he asked, and kept responding with, “is this for real? Is this for real?” Finally, happy reality settled in and Joanne said yes! They crossed the street and celebrated with prosecco and phone calls to friends and family back home.

Kate’s work speaks for itself, but we also love that her team offers a white glove approach to weddings, always bringing a second shooter, jumping in to lend an expert hand–even if that means stepping out from behind the camera. Kate and her team absolutely adore shooting couples that are taking a unique approach to their wedding, which, let’s be honest, is exactly GLW readers!

One of the things we love about Puerto Vallarta is its proximity to most major US cities. While there for your wedding, the location is also perfect for memorable bachelor and bachelorette parties! With excursions like golf, water sports, or even a boat trip to Yelapa where you can hike to waterfalls through the jungle, fish and swim in the calm waters, and visit the local village. There is even a local yoga studio that take place in a renovated home. You can even enjoy yoga on a rooftop studio overlooking the city, while you relax and prep for the big day! Of course, there are a ton of ways to pamper yourself too, with a variety of massages and spa treatments.  Wedding Blog Puerto Vallarta Wedding Blog Puerto Vallarta Wedding Blog Puerto Vallarta

Bailey and Mike had the kind of wedding that looks like it belongs in the movies. An absolutely timeless gown, a bow-tied groom, a gushing father-of-the-bride, and a downtown Chicago locale–all the moments and details lend themselves to a cinematic elegance that we rarely see. This is obviously due in much part to photographer Annie Parish, who captured their wedding a similarly timeless approach. We are beyond thrilled to share with you such an incredibly beautiful couple, and the gorgeous images from their day.

What made the wedding special and unique?

It’s so hard to pinpoint what exactly made our wedding special and unique as the entire day, and weekend really, felt like a dream coming true that still hasn’t quite sunk in. I was a bride for Halloween when I was 5, so I’d obviously been thinking about my wedding for quite some time, and I can truly say there was nothing that happened on our wedding day that I didn’t want to happen and nothing that didn’t happen that I did want. Even down to the weather – it was raining heavily all morning the day of the wedding. I had been worried about the weather for weeks leading up to the big day, and knew that with my “the cosmos like to test me” kind of luck I knew we’d be thrown for a loop, and I was right. However, we didn’t have any scheduled outdoor events during the morning the day of, and somehow the weather decided to cooperate and stopped raining just in time for me to ride to the church with my dad, take photos outside in the gorgeous courtyard of our church before and after the ceremony, and for us to greet our guests after the ceremony on the steps surrounded by bubbles, just as I had always dreamed I’d be able to do. The gloomy skies even helped the reception room feel more romantic casting a darker glow over dinner which only served to highlight the hundreds of candles all over the dining room tables, giving the room an intimate dinner party feel, which is what I’d always wanted, but knew would be difficult to pull off with 170 guests.

Tell us about the dress and where/how you found it!

The dress was designed by Peter Langner and purchased at Ultimate Bride in Chicago. I always thought I wanted the big princess wedding dress, big full skirt and everything, however I also knew I wanted something different. I don’t like to follow the crowds trend wise, but am still very traditional, so wasn’t sure what I would end up with that would fit both categories. I told my consultant all of this, and we tried on about 5 different dresses of all shapes, and some were stunning. But she helped me narrow down what I did and didn’t like about each dress, and came back with another 5 dresses to try on. I saw my dress in the plastic bag and though “I need to try that one on”. My consultant wouldn’t let me, she wanted to save that one for last because it was so different than any other I’d seen. I again made it through the rest of the beautiful gowns, but when I put mine on I just knew, it was me in every sense. I loved the seams and the fact that the bottom folds of the dress weren’t sewn on to the top body of the dress but were designed by Peter Langner to be made of one single panel. The straps and sweetheart neckline were beautiful and I though the back was a statement maker. It also matched the color of my sister’s veil and sash perfectly, which to me felt like a sign. I really knew it was “the dress” when I almost refused to take it off at the end of our appointment J I loved my dress so much that the second time I cried on my wedding day, after just before walking down the aisle, was at the end of the night when I had to take my dress off!

What were some touches added to make it personal?

We had a few small touches throughout the day and night that made the entire wedding more personal for me. The hair stylist that came to do the bridal party has been doing my mother’s hair for 20+ years and did my first hair up do for a 7th grade dance. It was so special to have here there with us as she’s seen me grow up from awkward teenager to bride. For my something old, I wore a garter made by my Aunt out of lace from my Great Grandfather’s christening gown, threaded with blue ribbon for my something blue. I also carried a vintage handkerchief around my bouquet that was my maternal grandmothers. For my something borrowed I wore the veil and sash my sister wore at her wedding 2 summers earlier. Finally, the presiding minister over our ceremony was also the woman who lead me through my confirmation when I was in 8th grade.

What was the most memorable part of the day?

Mike and I didn’t see each other before the ceremony, so I have to say the most memorable moment for me was seeing his smiling face at the end of the aisle waiting for me as I walked towards him with my dad. I’d never seen him smile the way he was, and at that moment I felt pure happiness. Following that I would say the most memorable would be a related moment, when it was just my dad and I standing in the back of the church, waiting as the bridesmaids and groomsmen walked down the aisle. I got very emotional (the first time that day, which was shocking considering I’m a very emotional person) just as we were about to start walking, and I grabbed my dad’s hand and he gave me a big hug and started making jokes to help pull myself together. It was such a special moment between us that I’ll cherish forever.

Tell us how you met and became engaged.

Mike and I were introduced by a childhood friend of mine who went to college with him at Miami University. After I graduated from the University of Virginia, I moved back to Chicago to be closer to my family, and my childhood friend told me about “this guy I had to meet”. Mike and I met summer of 2007 and became friends over the next year. After a few false starts, we finally started dating in Fall of 2008 and he proposed in May 2013 in Key West, Florida. We had been to Key West a few years prior and really enjoyed our vacation, so when a cousin of Mike’s was getting married in nearby Jupiter, we took the opportunity to make a vacation out of it. We were staying at the Simonton Court Inn, an old cigar factory and ship captains home turned in to a beautiful B&B. Our room had a lovely balcony off of the bathroom, and as I thought Mike was about to jump in the shower he yelled for me to come out to the balcony. I was still in my towel from my shower and asked what was so important, can’t I get dressed? He insisted I come out, I figured there was a bird or something to see, and when I came out he motioned for me to sit down next to him on the chair. I was still confused as to what he would want, and asked if this could wait, and he further insisted I sit down. Just as I did, he got on to his knee and I finally understood what was happening. The proposal was so perfectly us, Mike catching me a bit off guard, having it just be the two of us, in one of our favorite spots. Mike also has a great photo of me in my towel showing off my new ring; I have to say I don’t think I’ve ever looked happier without makeup! We called our immediate family to share the news then left to go to a wonderful dinner at Blue Heaven, another favorite spot of ours. By chance, the table they gave us was the “Honeymoon” table. We celebrated with champagne and had a wonderful rest of our night.

She laid them upon her bosom,
Under a cloud of her hair,
And her red lips sang them a love-song
Till stars grew out of the air.

She opened her door and her window,
And the heart and the soul came through,
To her right hand came the red one,
To her left hand came the blue.

They set up a noise like crickets,
A chattering wise and sweet,
And her hair was a folded flower
And the quiet of love in her feet.

– William Butler Yeats, “Cap and Bells”
