A few words from Mint Design:

For our Black Swan shoot we were drawn to deep sultry colors such as merlots, plums, charcoals, rose’ and black. Our florals were loose and romantic, flowing with purple cotinus, red ranuculus, black pin cushions, privett berry, seeded eucalyptus, red hanging amaranthus, caramel antike and romantik antike garden roses. We used a black circular table which we dressed with black candle sticks, bronze candle holders, florals, black plates, feather winged chargers and black drinking chalices. Our fabulous black fondant cake made by De Coeur Bakeshop was an absolute show stopper. We placed it on a table in in the lake, to give the cake the illusion that it was floating. This same table was later used to balance our Black Swan in the water making it seem as she was walking on water.

We have so many readers that come to us from all over the world, so we feel like a little international flair is only right! Today’s feature by Europe based Esther and Gabe of Bell Studio is, well, absolutely beyond! After a long engagement, Victoria and Chase decided that an intimate elopement was the perfect fit for them. While they toyed with the idea of exotic locales like Italy, they ended up deciding that the bride’s family farm in Tennessee was the perfect fit. We are just obsessed with all the floral details by Soulflowers and the lovely images by Nathan Westerfield.

What made the elopement special and unique?
We were engaged for a year and six months before we decided to elope. We both knew we wanted a very special and intimate ceremony that we could share just between us. The location was decided kind of by chance when we were visiting my parent’s farm in Tennessee. We had tossed around ideas from San Francisco to Italy, and when we were sitting up there looking at the view, it just felt right.

Tell us about the gown and where/how you found it!
Even though our wedding was just the two of us, it was a family effort. My mother and I spent hours searching for the perfect dress only to come up empty handed. I was looking for a dress with a bohemian feel, but not too over the top. I dreamed up what my perfect wedding dress would be, and she made it. It was a great experience getting to spend time together, and also create such a beautiful piece!

One of the most unique parts of the wedding was the floral arbor we had the ceremony under. I wanted my flowers to feel like an extension of nature, so my entire family gathered local Tennessee plants from the farm to construct the arbor.

What were some touches added to make it personal?
A special personal touch that was very important to us was our officiant. We wanted someone who knew us well and loved both of us. In the end we decided to go with my father. We read traditional vows, but we edited them to be a little more our style. The ceremony was only about 10 minutes long, but it was full of great advice to us, and lots of happy tears.

What was the most memorable part of the day?
The most memorable part of the wedding would be walking hand in hand together “down the aisle.” There wasn’t really and aisle, but when we got to the ceremony site he took my hand and said, “Lets go get married.”

Tell us how you met and became engaged.
We met on my very first day of college. I was looking for the office to make my student i.d. , and got very lost in the basement of the building. He was the only person I had seen in ten minutes, so I flagged him down to give me directions. He walked me to the i.d. office and laughed at me while I was getting my photo taken. We parted ways, and didn’t meet up again for two years. I jokingly played footsy under the dinner table with him, and the rest is history.

Megan and Brian knew that they wanted their wedding celebration to be about bringing together their two families, so their invite list included only their 22 immediate members, and they used the opportunity to combine a long weekend vacation on the Isle of Palms with their wedding day. Their dockside ceremony and candlelit reception featured details that were as beautiful as they were personal. We absolutely adore Megan and Brian’s “joining of families” and know you will too.

What made the wedding special and unique?

Everything about the wedding was special to us. We spent the long weekend of the wedding in a rental house on Isle of Palms with both of our families. That was such a special time for everyone to get to know each other better and for our two families to feel like one. The actual wedding day was filled with love and family. We only had our immediate family there so there were 22 guests. We were able to spend time with each and every person and truly enjoy the wedding. The most important part to me and Brian from the outset was the combining of our families. My son and Brian’s two daughters are our world and we really wanted to celebrate us all coming together. My son Ethan was Brian’s best man and Brian’s daughters Rylie and Erin were my maids of honor. It meant so much to us to have them up at the altar with us while we exchanged our vows.

Tell us about the gown and where/how you found it!

The gown that I chose was one of the first ones that I tried on. I went with Brian’s sister to Evelyn’s bridal in Lugoff shortly after we got engaged. I loved the dress immediately- it was beautiful but completely comfortable too- I could picture dancing and having a great time in it. I was skeptical that I could find “the” dress that quickly so I kept looking but shortly after returned to the original dress and loved it. It was perfect for our wedding.

What were some touches added to make it personal?

RiverOaks went to a tremendous effort to make our wedding unique to our family. We had almost as many children as adults at the wedding and RiverOaks went to a huge effort to make them comfortable and involved in the wedding- we had a kids area where all the children could color, play ball and play croquet during cocktail hour and the kids all rang bells to announce our arrival from pictures. The overall feel of the wedding was similar to a French/Italian family wedding. Brian and I took a trip to Paris and throughout southern France the year before we got married and wanted to incorporate the beautiful flowers and lavender and overall feel of that trip.

What was the most memorable part of the day?

The most memorable part of the day was when the five of us (Megan, Brian, Erin, Rylie and Ethan) went out on the dock to light the Thai lantern symbolizing the joining of our two families.  Marianne from RiverOaks brought the lantern back from a trip to Thailand and gave it to us as a wedding present.  We went down to the dock at dusk and Ethan and I lit the lantern while Brian and the girls held up the lantern. We knew that it was considered bad luck if the lantern landed in the water so we held our breath and finally let it go. The lantern dipped down and hovered over the water before taking off and sailing up into the sky. It was a beautiful thing to watch and such a special way to mark the creation of our new family.

Tell us how you met and became engaged!

Brian and I met through mutual friends and dated for a year and a half before getting engaged. We got engaged in St. John, USVI when on vacation there in December. We had traveled to St. John the year before and our favorite day there we spent on Honeymoon beach. We hiked down, spent the afternoon on the beach and stayed to watch the sunset. We were the only people on the beach when a boat pulled up on the beach and the family walked straight up to us and asked us to move. It turns out they had gotten married under the exact palm tree where we were sitting and had come to renew their vows at sunset. It was such a special memory that Brian chose that exact spot to propose the next year.

Christina and Lee were married at the absolutely gorgeous Ocean House in Rhode Island. The venue, which overlooks the Atlantic Ocean, was an incredibly gorgeous setting for their big day. What we’re pretty much obsessing over, times a million, is Christina’s Elie by Elie Saab wedding gown. You are going to cry fashion tears when you see this one. Seriously, her dress is so pretty, it hurts! Plus, we are going to be dreaming about those flowers by Greenlion Weddings for the rest of the day. Okay, we’ve said enough. We’ll let you enjoy the gorg images by Meghan Sepe Photography.

from the bride:

Lee and I (Christina) met at Duke University my freshman year and his junior year in Durham, NC. The first summer we were dating Lee invited me to his hometown in Westerly, Rhode Island. From the moment I was there I fell in love with the quaint town, beautiful seashore and amazing New England beach cottages along the Watch Hill coastline. Knowing how much I love being outdoors and laying in the sun, Lee took me to East Beach, a small beach in the heart of Watch Hill during my first visit . At the time, the Ocean House, a beautifully historic structure originally built in 1868 and sitting at the top of East Beach was closed and in the early stages of its complete preservation and reconstruction. While we enjoyed our sunny beach day I imagined how amazing the building must have been in its prime and wished I could’ve experienced it in its glory.

Some years later, Lee and I were enjoying a quiet Saturday morning in NYC, where we reside now. I had just returned home from the gym when Lee surprised me by spontaneously suggesting I pack a bag so we can go enjoy dessert at my favorite spot in Raleigh, North Carolina, where I grew up. Having lost some playful bets recently, I thought Lee was paying me back for lost wages, ha! After a quick plane ride we enjoyed a delicious dinner and the much anticipated dessert. On our way back to the hotel for the evening, Lee took a detour to Duke Campus where he proposed on the steps of Duke Chapel, a famous staple on campus and on the grounds where we fell in love.

When it came time to plan our wedding, we instantly thought of the now fully restored Ocean House, since throughout our years dating we continued to return to Lee’s hometown and enjoyed our time there. With so many incredible memories for us made there, we wanted to share it with all our family and friends who had never visited the area before.

Some of my favorite aspects of our wedding included our beautiful stationery which I did through Paperless Post with the help of my friend Ivy who works there with me, and our Welcome Bags which we filled with local and homemade goodies and had waiting in our guests’ hotel rooms upon arrival. Of course, with yummy cake having a special place in our hearts, our Vegan wedding cake and surprise groomsman cake were quite delicious and important too! Leading up to our wedding we were looking forward to the big day but we were both surprised by the sheer bliss we felt throughout the day. The beautiful venue along with the support of a strong team of vendors helped put our minds at ease and allowed us to enjoy each other and celebrate with our family and friends. Our wedding was far and away our best, most memorable day.

We are continuing with our new “international” series to share with you more weddings from around the world! Michelle and Jacques planned an incredibly beautiful and romantic wedding in South Africa, a location which traveled from all parts of the world to reach! The couple, both being architects, chose a modern classic look for the details of the day and chose to hire fine art photographer, Genevieve Fundaro Photography (who shoots not only in Africa, but internationally!) to capture the day in an elegant fashion. We just adore Jacques and Michelle’s style and know you classic brides will too!

What made the wedding special and unique?

It was the most incredible, intimate weekend getaway, where we were able to spend quality time with our closest friends and family – a once in a lifetime experience. Certain guests traveled from around the world to meet us in one of the most beautiful parts of South Africa to share in our special day. It was a weekend filled with family and friendships both old and new, love and laughter, remembrance and new memories.

Tell us about the gown and where/how you found it!

The gown is a St Patrick design from Delavida. I wanted something that suited who I was; nothing too flashy and big and bold, but something elegant and unique. I wanted something that that made me feel beautiful and something that I knew would light up Jacques’ eyes when he saw me in it. The moment I stepped into my dress, I didn’t want to take it off again!

What were some touches added to make it personal?

Everything about the weekend was designed around great food – the perfect opportunity for all our guests to chat and get to know each other. As architects, we wanted a wedding style of modern elegance, from the venue right down to the décor, details, food and program. We put great effort into planning our weekend to ensure it ran smoothly for everyone’s enjoyment.

What was the most memorable part of the day?

The moment we saw each other in the chapel – it was like time stood still and everything else faded into the background, where the two of us were the only thing in focus. At that moment, all the stress and nerves leading up to that point disappeared and all that way left was pure joy, happiness, love and excitement at seeing each other.

Why did you choose your photographer, what about them/their images made you want them for your day?

We have always loved the idea of a photographer who can capture a moment with emotion as opposed taking a stiff and structured photo. Gen’s ability to capture the most intimate moments between a couple, a group of friends, or family members is an incredible gift and we simply couldn’t pass up the chance to have her document our wedding day. Her unique style characterised by subdued tones, soft light, and a diverse range of compositions spoke to us and our interests in both art and photography. Each and every photo she has taken in not only unique in character, but also captures a very special moment that we will remember forever.

Tell us how you met and became engaged.

After years of friendship, our love for each other evolved into something much deeper and more meaningful than we could have ever imagined. At a moment of clarity our lives changed forever. All of a sudden, we could not imagine our futures without each other; everything we did and accomplished was with the other in mind. Our relationship has grown from strength to strength; true companionship, love, friendship, trust and support have led us to this special day. We cannot wait to see what life has in store for us in our future together.

What made the wedding special and unique?

If Ed and I could describe August 23, 2014 in one word, it would be EPic. Sharing this day with our family and friends made it that much more special for us. We love the fact that we personalized our wedding from our vows, to our first dance, to the theme, the decor and desserts, to a mini-film which told our love-story involving our family and friends. We also loved that it was an intimate setting… “Big” but small wedding.

Tell us about the gown and where/how you found it!

My bridesmaids are all from out of town. So last year during the Christmas holiday season, everyone was home visiting family. I scheduled a few trips for us in one day and it was our last stop; a trunk sale at Mariposa Boutique in Orange County. My only criteria was that I didn’t want lace and I didn’t want beading, otherwise, I tried to go in with an open mind. To be honest when I tried it on, it didn’t feel like it was IT. All of my bridesmaids loved it though! It wasn’t until I face-timed with my mom and saw her reaction. After that, I knew it was the one. An off-white lace overlay made of tulle and hints of beading by Pronovias. It was simply perfect, and funny how I walked out of there and fell in love with what I originally didn’t want. The best part about it!? The price tag–waaaaay under budget.

What were some touches added to make it personal?

We wanted to share our love-story with our guests from the get-go. From there, I “ran-away” with a love-story theme and DIY’d the decor: Escort library cards filed in card catalog boxes I purchased from Marshall’s, hand-made bookmark place cards, book centerpieces spray painted in gold, tables numbered by chapters, chalk board signs (with the help of another DIY bride, Alyssa) and a dessert library with all home-made treats/desserts (including our cake and cake topper) made by friends and family! We had one of Edward’s friend since 7th grade perform an acoustic version of one of our favorite songs of 2014, “Latch,” by Sam Smith and our cousins Ricky and Christine of The Yodsukars also produced a mini-film of our love-story of how we met. When I asked my little nieces and nephew what their favorite part of the wedding was, they said “When we watched the movie.” For the bridesmaids, I wanted each of them to be different to show their individuality but at the same time I wanted them to be comfortable in the dress that they were wearing. I gave them a color palette and allowed them to choose their own dresses. All different styles but complimentary in color.

What was the most memorable part of the day?

Can I say ALL OF IT!?! Since then, we can’t stop thinking about our wedding day. We’ve watched the videos and looked through photos taken by guests over and over!! We miss it so so much!! But if we were to choose, it was our ceremony. For me particularly, it was the part where Edward said his vows.

Tell us how you met and became engaged.

We met at The Bonaventure Hotel in DTLA at a New Year’s Eve party through mutual friends. He was the first person I met shortly after the stroke of midnight. That evening, we sat in the hotel lobby in front of a water fountain away from the noise and had a great conversation. I got cold and Ed gave me his sweater which I ended up “stealing” that night in hopes that I would see him again. It was returned on our first date and the rest was history… On our 3rd-year anniversary, he took me back to the same exact spot where we met/talked on that one New Year’s night and that’s where he asked me to be his wife. He read a letter that he wrote prior to getting down on one knee, this letter was also featured in our mini love-story film.

What made the wedding special and unique?
K&T – When we started planning our wedding we knew right away that we didn’t want to get married in a church. Neither one of us are religious, but we are spiritual. We were honored to have our close friend John O’Connell be our officiant. We chose a location nearby which set the back drop for our Spanish/Italian wedding. We wanted it to be a celebration of friends, family, and love. Also, our dog, Phil, made an appearance as the ring bearer. He was a big hit.

Tell us about the dress and where/how you found it!
K – I had no idea what I wanted, but I knew I wanted something with lace. I tried on quite a few dresses the first outing, but didn’t quite find the one. It was on my second dress shopping day we decided to go to Panache in Pasadena. I walked in and was quite overwhelmed with so many beautiful gowns. At first I didn’t think I was going to find my dress, but there it was, peeking out from the window from which it stood on display. All I could really see was the ruffling train flowing over the edge of the stoop and the special details on the back bodice. I knew I had to try it on. It was the first dress I tried on at Panache that day and immediately I knew it was the dress. The dress is designed by Lazaro and has so many special details I couldn’t have dreamt for a more special dress.

What were some touches added to make it personal?
K – Tony and I are designers who love all things natural and slightly rustic. We wanted to do something that expressed our aesthetic and who we are. Tony, being a graphic designer, pretty much designed everything – from the invitations to a special wax seal which united both our initials. We kept it simple and the color palette minimal only using black, white, natural, the colors found in succulents and the softest peony pinks.

What was the most memorable part of the day?
K – It’s so hard to pick one thing!! To be honest for me it was hearing Tony say his vows to me. The whole day was just so fantastic. Having so many friends and family with us here in LA.
T – Seeing Kathleen walk down the aisle towards me, looking absolutely beautiful. The reception was a blast, too. It was great having all of our favorite people in one room, cutting loose. The whole day was memorable.

Tell us how you met and became engaged!
T – We met in Savannah, Georgia at Savannah College of Art and Design. Immediately there was a connection and we couldn’t stop talking about dreams, art, pets, friends. I proposed at sunset on a small beach on Catalina Island. It’s beautiful and only a boat ride from LA. A funny thing happened earlier in the day. We went para-sailing and Kathleen’s a little scared of heights. She wasn’t sure that she wanted to go up in the sky. The boat captain (who was joking with her up to that point) got super serious and fatherly. He reassured her that she was completely safe. Of course, once we got into the sky, she loved it and was beaming. When we came back down the captain announced that he was retiring and that it was his last day on the job. He shook my hand and very seriously said “Take care of her.” It was like he somehow knew I had the ring in my pocket.
