What made the wedding special and unique?
There has always been a special place in both of our hearts for summertime in Nebraska. Hot summer days are typically accompanied by comfortable evenings. Conversely, rain and thunderstorms can roll in at the blink of an eye. For our special day in June we decided to take our chances with an outdoor, “tented” wedding reception, and we truly had perfect weather. We were so happy with our venue. We tried to keep things tucked away in the country, and found an amazing property with room for our guests to roam and beautiful landscapes. We just so happened to luck out with the fireflies and perfect weather.
Our day was so laid back and relaxing for us. Obviously seeing all of our family and friends in one place was unforgettable, but the highlight of the day was being able to see everyone we love look so relaxed and content. As the sun set on our venue we felt that “summer night in the backyard” kind of vibe. This was a really special feeling for us, because we knew that this was the type of environment that our family and friends felt most comfortable with as well. Little kids were running around all over the green space, our friends and family were taking pictures throughout the property, and our venue was far enough outside of city limits that the sunset and stargazing were unforgettable!
Tell us about the gown and where/how you found it!
Shopping for my wedding dress was one of my favorite parts leading up to the wedding. Like every girl, I had an idea of the ‘perfect’ dress; it was just a matter of finding that dress in real life. I was almost certain I had found the dress and was trying it on one last time for my mom and mother-in-law to be, when I saw a new dress in the corner of the store that I had not seen before. I asked to try it on, and one look in the mirror and I knew this was the dress I was going to get married in. The dress was the perfect amount of simple and glamour; with a low cut back and with the most intricate beading and design work of any dress I had tried. The hardest part after finding the dress was keeping it a secret from Brady up until the wedding!
What were some touches added to make the wedding personal?
Early on, there were a few twists and touches that we knew we wanted to include in our day. We each decided that writing our own vows would be something we could put some time into and make personal. It definitely made us both a little sappy during the ceremony, but it was totally worth it. During the reception we wanted to make sure we offered some of our favorite summer foods and drinks. We made sure we offered ice cream for a late night snack.
What was the most memorable part of the day?
I think we would both say, hands-down, that our most memorable part of the day was seeing each other for the first time. Cliché, I know, but walking up behind Brady and tapping him on the shoulder and watching his reaction when he saw me in my wedding dress totally put me at ease and calmed all the anxious jitters and butterflies in my stomach. From that point on, I knew no matter what happened, this was going to be the best day of my life.
Tell us how you met and became engaged.
From Brady: We met in Lincoln a little over four years ago. It’s funny because we went to college together and never spoke to each other one time. Shortly after we met, we started getting pretty serious. On one of our first dates, we went on a long walk on a hot summer night. I capped it off by buying her a 32oz Gatorade and gave her a kiss good night. I was swooned from that point on, and I think she was too!
Sports have always meant a whole lot to me, especially baseball, which I played in college. When I proposed to Denae I wrote, “will you marry me” on a baseball and asked her to play catch. She struggles with coordination sometimes, and threw the ball in the mud three to four times before finally realizing what it said. Luckily she said yes!
