 Boy Meets Girl.
Love is Oysters & Wine

Wedding Blog A Parisian Proposal Story!

Her Version:

I met Tri through Christian Rosales, my roomate at the time. Christian and I was both studying at Barnes & Nobles until Christian received a text message about a happy hour invite at Dogwood Tavern. It took less than 5 minutes to convince me to postpone studying (who wouldn’t say yes to $3.99 ½ dozen raw oysters!?). Sitting across the table from Tri, I only recall saying “Hi” and “Does anyone want to try some oysters?” We barely spoke that day- we must have been preoccupied with filling our bellies with oysters. Two weeks later, we “bumped” into each other at the VA Vintage Wine Festival at Bull Run. When I say “bumped” into each other, what I really mean is receiving a call from an unknown caller by the name of “Robert” claiming he met you on Facebook and insisting that the two of you meet up at the festival. I’m not sure why anyone would think this was a “smooth move” but it caught my attention. While most will consider it stalking, I found him charming and was intrigued by his confidence so we met up. After several casual text messages and gchats, we finally went on our first date. I remember going home shortly after the date and told Nhi, one of my closest girl friends, that “he was the one.” However cliche it may be, “when you know, you know.”

His Version:

She stalked me first.

Our Proposal Story
A “Free” Trip to Paris !

Her Version:

Ever since I was a young girl, I’ve always dreamt of visiting the City of Lights – to indulge in its french food, to sip its bordeaux, to leisurely lounge at the cafe, to be inspired by its chic fashion, and to wander aimlessly around its beautiful architecture even though I can barely say “bonjour.” This dream came true when I received a phone call from one of my closest girlfriend, Caroline, who had offered me her two “free” tickets to Paris since she wasn’t able to go due to a “schedule conflict.” Excitement would simply be an understatement. I quickly called Tri to share my good news and I immediately cleared my schedule to make this trip (I’m never one to miss out on a “good deal!”). After days of planning, reading travel blogs, attempting to learn a few words thanks to rosetta stone, Tri and I set off to Paris.

Overwhelmed with my “Paris Must See” list, never once did the thought of a proposal occur to me, even though it was right around the time of our two year anniversary. After two days of eating and drinking our way through Paris, Tri insisted that we both wake up early one morning to take sunrise pictures at the Eiffel Tower. When we arrived, Tri found a hidden locked garden with a mini waterfall and windmill right underneath the Eiffel Tower. Since it was locked, Tri told me to jump over the fence. Perhaps it was too early and that I was barely awake, but I jumped the fence even though I was fairly certain we were breaking all sorts of Parisian laws (um, trespassing for starters!). Tri then set up the iPod, tripod, and camera and told me this was my “Paris Fashion” shoot. With music in the background and such a romantic view, I decided we should dance. The music slowly stopped and Tri said to me, “What if I told you that this wasn’t a free trip? That I had planned this trip for you.” In disbelief, my first reaction was, “What do you mean it’s not free!?!” Followed by “Awww, you did all this for me?” My world was spinning. Then, Tri suddenly bent down on one knee, took my hand and asked me to marry him. It was the happiest moment I’ve ever felt in my entire life! It was as if I was the leading actress in a Rom-Com where the weird, hopeless romantics win! Alas, Tri forgot to turn on the video camera so there aren’t any embarrassing clips of this little love story of ours. Oh darn!

Callie and Kyle spent their second date celebrating the 4th of July holiday in Napa, and when it came time for a proposal, Kyle decided the destination was a perfect spot to pop the question, so naturally, it made perfect sense for their wedding to take place in the same gorgeous valley! The pair hails from Texas, so their destination wedding Beaulieu Gardens was an extra special affair that brought their nearest and dearest to a place that held so much sentimental value! We’re absolutely enamored with the gorgeous details pulled together by Event Planner, Shannon Leahy along with florals by Kathleen Deery Design. Very special thanks to photographer Jennifer Lindberg who was on hand to capture these gorgeous images!

What made the wedding special and unique?

Without a doubt, the venue made our wedding so special and unique. Beaulieu Garden is a magical place. From the dramatic entrance through the tree lined road to the ceremony in the garden to the dinner under the arbor lit with twinkle lights, it was all so beautiful. Napa is a special place for us and to have the wedding in Napa at such a spectacular place was more than I could have asked for.

Tell us about the gown and where/how you found it!

I found my beautiful Ines di Santo dress with a bit of luck and lots of searching! One Saturday, my mother, my sister and I visited three or four different shops. I had no idea what I wanted so I tried on lots of dresses. By the end of the day, I thought I knew which dress I wanted. The bridal shop (which has since closed) agreed to open the store on Sunday so that I could try it on again one last time before it was packed up and sent back with the trunk show. When my mom and I walked in, I spotted this gorgeous dress out of the corner of my eye that I had not seen the day before. When I tried it on, I knew it was “the one” because it was the first and only one that made me truly smile. After the wedding, one of our friends came up to me and said “My wife makes me watch Say Yes to the Dress every weekend and this dress blows all of those dresses away!”, so it was clearly the right choice!

What were some touches added to make it personal?

Kyle and I love food and wine, so we made sure to incorporate our favorite things to eat and drink. For the cocktail hour, we had Moscow Mules, Kyle’s favorite drink, in copper mugs. For dinner, we served our guests a beautiful beet salad and delicious roasted chicken, two of my favorite things. Instead of a groom’s cake, we had profiteroles with ice cream and sorbet and a choice of sauces, Kyle’s favorite dessert. It all felt like us. We were so lucky to have worked with Paula Le Duc and her team who went above and beyond our expectations.

What was the most memorable part of the day?

The most memorable part of the day was the very beginning of the ceremony. I walked in with my mom, gave her a hug goodbye and then walked by myself for a few steps. I stopped so that Kyle could join me and we could walk together towards the steps where the ceremony took place. He walked towards me with the biggest smile on his face and when he got to me, he said “Wow!” I loved that I got to share those moments with my mom and that Kyle and I took those last steps together as a team.

Tell us how you met and became engaged.

Kyle and I knew each other in college and shared mutual friends. Many years later, Kyle was visiting friends in Houston and we ran into each other at a Kentucky Derby party. I loved catching up with him and thought maybe something more was there, so the next time I was in Dallas, I asked him out for a drink. I had a great time that night and Kyle must have thought so too because two weeks later, he asked me to spend July 4th with him in Napa! It was an amazing trip and clearly the best second date of my life! Everything seemed so easy and natural as if we had been dating for years. From there, we dated long distance between Houston and Dallas for four years. For my birthday in January, Kyle and I returned to Napa for a long weekend. I thought maybe we would get engaged, but I was so happy to go on the trip and spend time together that I really didn’t think about it much. On Saturday afternoon, we visited a winery called Constant located on Diamond Mountain (wink wink). It was one of the most beautiful places I had ever seen. The owner of the winery poured us a couple of glasses of wine and then casually left us alone. After a bit of prodding on Kyle’s part, we walked outside to enjoy the view. I heard Kyle say my name behind me and when I turned around, he was on one knee and asked “Will you marry me?” I was so happy and surprised and of course said Yes! We celebrated that night at the French Laundry. It was so special to get engaged and then married in Napa, the place where it all began.

What made the wedding special and unique?

Colorado is known for its breath-taking mountains, beautiful farm land, and countless days of sunshine. For our special day, we really wanted to find a venue that would put all of that splendor into one evening for our wedding party and guests. Lone Hawk Farm fulfilled those needs. Having the Boulder Flatirons as our backdrop created the natural and authentic feel we desired. The horses grazing in the field beside us, and a beautiful barn created a rustic and chic atmosphere. I’ve always found myself torn between the city and countryside The charm of a country farm coupled with the elegant details met both of those places in my heart and made for the perfect combination.

I found my dress at Blue Bridal in downtown Denver. I loved that the dress had an overarching classic look, but contained many small intricate details; the lace underlay on the bodice, the jeweled belt. I knew it was my dress from the moment I tried it on.

What were some touches added to make it personal?

Photographs of Nick and I were scattered throughout the farm, showcasing our relationship and deeply-rooted love. We had elegant table settings with home-made jam in tiny jars for our guests’ dinner rolls. A beautiful backdrop made of sheets of music and coral paper surrounded our sweet-heart table adorned with monogramed champagne glasses and wooden “Mr.” and “Mrs.” signs. Our ceremony was officiated by my father, and we had family and friends from all over the county come to celebrate with us.

What was the most memorable part of the day?

Our ceremony was no-doubt, the most memorable part of the day. Those moments at the altar are some of my most cherish memories. Peach, coral and blush flower arrangements hung from the tree above us, as we gave our vows. We said “I do” surrounded by those we love, a beautiful backdrop of groves of trees, rolling hills, and the Rocky Mountains. Our closest friends stood beside us as we prayed and took communion. It was the perfect way to start my life with Nick. I wouldn’t change a thing.

Tell us how you met and became engaged.

Our love story actually began twenty-some years ago. Our families were friends, and most Friday nights were spent together. And yet, although we knew each other, Nick and I would have never guessed that one day we’d be husband and wife. We always viewed one other just as “close family friends”. It wasn’t until after college when that changed. I remember seeing Nick one Sunday at church, and something was different. He was no longer the young boy I grew up with. Later, Nick told me he had the same feeling. We both sensed something special in the other person, and saw a future. Since that Sunday, we’ve been inseparable.

Nick wanted the proposal to be a complete surprise – so he arranged one of my girlfriends to ask Nick and me to go to a restaurant with her and our other friend (which is now her Fiancé!). We met them for a casual dinner at a local pizza place. While the pizza is one-of-a-kind delicious, there was nothing out of the ordinary about the evening. In the middle of dinner, Josh (our friend) mentioned that he would like to take a trip to Daniels Park to reminisce about the first time we hung out the previous summer. We got into our cars and drove to the nearby park. As Nick and I got out of the car, Josh made an excuse to stay behind with Sara.

Nick led me through rocky boulders to the very spot we hung out the first time. He then started to pray with me, got down on one knee and proposed. Meanwhile Josh, who is a photographer, captured the whole proposal. Every time I look at those pictures I get goose bumps.

What made the wedding special and unique?

We narrowed our guest list down to 37 people so we were able to keep it a small, intimate, and incredibly personal event. Food is a very important piece of our lives and with the small guest list we were able to have a four-course tasting menu with wine pairings along with our cake.

It is a strapless Augusta Jones tiered lace gown with a sash tied with a large bow in the back. It was the first dress I tried on at Allegria Bridal in Belmont as I was just browsing with my mother. I tried it on and it fit my personality perfectly, we both knew it was the one for me so we cancelled all future appointments and ordered it right on the spot.

What were some touches added to make it personal?

We both love nature and it was important to us that the ceremony and reception be held outside, despite the fact that the day turned out to be a bit cold and the wild became wild as the day went on. Every aspect of our wedding was personal to us, from the lavender toss, to the wine pairings primarily from the region of France where we were to go on our honeymoon, to the almond chocolate cake, everything represented us to a tee.

What was the most memorable part of the day?

The most memorable part of the day was definitely walking down the aisle and seeing him at the end. After 6 1/2 years together, I figured I would not be overly emotional and would be able to remain level-headed and calm, but once I got to the end I couldn’t help but become a bit teary eyed and overwhelmed with excitement.

What made the wedding special and unique?

The round hay bales and VW Beetle were especially unique, but the bride’s lovely French style was so refreshing for a New England wedding. The vast majority of the bridal party included the bride’s siblings (1 brother and 6 sisters), all from the same two loving and supportive parents.

The bride found her wedding gown at L’Elite Boutique in Boston, MA. Living in DC at the time, the bride traveled to MA for one weekend to start her search. Coincidentally, there was a Reem Acra trunk show that same weekend showcasing the newest styles not currently in stores. While trying on several gowns, she spotted her soon-to-be gown on another bride and knew right then that she had to try it on. The unique French lace matched so perfectly with the French-style New England summer wedding.

What were some touches added to make it personal?

The bride and groom read their vows to each other separately before the ceremony, just after their first sight and it was very touching. The chuppah, which the bride and groom were married under, was constructed from birch trees found around the venue (the bride’s family residence) and was put together by the groom as a symbol of providing shelter and support for their growing family.

What was the most memorable part of the day?

The most memorable part of the day was the anticipation and build up just before the “first sight.” It was a surreal and perfect moment that could never be replicated. The bride and groom were surrounded by everyone they loved in a serene and peaceful oasis before the full event went underway. Corinna impeccably documented that feeling with our gorgeous family shots surrounding the antique French settee tucked into the woods just along the bay.

But the wedding day went by in a flash! The bride and groom were able to extend their wedding a bit further with a “day after shoot,” which allowed them time for just the two of them all while documenting the occasion in a relaxed and comfortable setting.

The bride and groom met during orientation before freshman year of college, it was one of those “saw her from across the room” moments.

The groom proposed on the first night of their 5-year anniversary vacation in Antigua. He planned to propose with his mother’s ring on the second night of the trip, but upon arrival, he just couldn’t wait. On a desolate beach, he proposed under the multitude of Caribbean stars.

What made the wedding special and unique?

The wedding was held at Black Barn Vineyard in Havelock North, Hawkes Bay. It was the perfect summer’s evening; warm and calm, with the most serene golden light. Most of our guests had traveled from other cities in New Zealand, and in some cases, overseas to celebrate the day with us.

Our families both come from Hawkes Bay – our mothers went to the same high school. Hawkes Bay is where our story began – it represents family and a unique history. I got ready in historic Rush Cottage with just my sisters and parents, surrounded by photos of my grandparents on their wedding days, and Vinnie’s family too. We feel so blessed to come from such a strong family and a lot of this comes back to Hawkes Bay. Tell us about your dress and where/how you found it.

My dress was from Rue de Seine. It was the first bridal boutique I went to and only the third dress I tried on. My mother picked it out. I fell in love with the dress the moment I put it on. I loved the romance of the lace and the soft bohemian kaftan style. I added a classical touch with a Jenny Packham crystal comb in my hair.

What were some touches added to make it personal?

My aunty Elsie is an Opera singer in Wellington and she did us the honour of singing as I walked down the aisle and again as we signed the register. She sung the Italian song ‘O Sole Mio’, a nod to Vinnie’s Italian heritage and his remarkable Nona.

I also carried with me a blue ribbon that my Grandma had found for me that morning, and a very delicate handkerchief that my Nana had given my aunty Ainslie on her wedding day. My mother and grandmother were adamant I carry something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue. I had not planned on following this tradition but it all came together on the morning of the wedding and I somehow ended up with all the pieces I needed.

What was the most memorable part of the day?

We had photos taken just after the ceremony, before we went in for the reception. It was early evening and we were standing in the vines in beautiful soft light. It was such a peaceful quiet moment and we were able to breathe deeply and really take in the day.

Vinnie proposed on Christmas Eve. We had just finished watching The Grinch Who Stole Christmas – a tradition in our house – when he began to recite a poem he had written in the style of Dr Seuss. He proposed at the end of the poem on bended knee and we celebrated with champagne as Christmas Eve became Christmas Day.

What made the wedding special and unique?

Between swapping out reception venues halfway through planning, finding a pre-owned wedding dress from across the world, to capturing every DIY down to the last detail, our wedding was a true labor of love! We have so many friends and family we wanted involved in our very traditional Catholic wedding, we ended up with over 300 guests in attendance and our bridal party brimming with all of our best friends and in the end we wanted and received, one big celebration!

Tell us about the dress and where/how you found it!

The dress may be my favorite detail from our wedding; I cannot stop gushing about this! I tell people it took planes, trains, and automobiles to get to me. We were getting ready to leave for another dress store when I stumbled upon it on the ‘forbidden/do-not-step-close-to-this-very-expensive rack’. It hit all the points I was looking for in a dress that up until that moment didn’t exist in all the others. After trying it on with much encouragement from one of my maids-of-honor and mom, I immediately burst into tears. I finally had “the” moment, which I didn’t think would happen. The dress ended up being way over budget. However, though I don’t recommend to most brides, I ended up finding the dress, pre-owned and never worn, for half the cost from a woman in Switzerland. Using a pre-owned wedding website, we negotiated the price and shipping and within 24 hours I had my dress – all of 10 sizes too big. I ended up taking it to a local tailor and they fit it perfectly to my frame! For more dress details…click here!

What were some touches added to make it personal?

Cody let me have free reign when it came to personal touches of décor, colors, and flower choices (peonies, of course). We stuck within the realm of navy, blush pinks, and gold accents. Very traditional and romantic! I crafted my way through our entire wedding between the seating chart, chalkboard and floral signs, table numbers, and a true labor of love, our entire invitation suite, just to name a few things!

Cody also incorporated the love letters my grandparents wrote to one another when they were engaged in the 1940s (talk about tears!) and I attached my late grandma’s ring to my bouquet as my something ‘old’.

Instead of the traditional unity candle lighting, our priest let us have a wine box ceremony, officiated by my aunt. We wrote letters to one another five years in the future, to be opened on our fifth wedding anniversary. The letters and a bottle of red were sealed in a custom box!

What was the most memorable part of the day?

How do you even pick? For me, sealing the deal with our first kiss! Cody gave me a quick kiss but I pulled him back in for one more! It’s our day – who says you shouldn’t have two first kisses? But truly spending one of the most magical days with the love of my life, surrounded by our friends and family!

Cody and I met the day before freshman year started in 2006, we both lived in the same dorm. We dated on and off for 2 years before making it officially our junior year and have been together ever since! He proposed in December 2012, right before Christmas (more on that story here!). Due to my brother’s wedding that following April, we choose to have ours the following year to help offset expenses for all families involved! Let me tell you, a year and a half is a long time to plan! (Read the whole story here!!!)

What made the wedding special and unique?

Given the “movie” title from the proposal (see below), our careers in entertainment, family ties to show business — Archie’s father designed several iconic movie posters with Archie’s mother writing the corresponding copylines and Anne’s great grandfather owned several movie theaters — and love of classic film, it seemed fitting for us to have an old Hollywood inspired wedding. To that end, guests were invited to attend the world premiere of “Marry Me, Darling!” with a film one-sheet inspired invitation designed my stepfather, a graphic designer.

The “premiere” took place at Carondelet House in Los Angeles, a restored villa from the 1920s which was transformed for the evening to harken back to the golden age of cinema, with period-era family photos and heirlooms sprinkled throughout. Outside the venue, classic movie posters and a sandwich board featuring the enlarged invitation greeted guests and they were further welcomed with gold popcorn boxes with our monogram and Archie’s childhood friend playing famous Hollywood scores on the piano.

We wanted our guests to feel like they were attending a special party at someone’s private home, and encouraged them to mix and mingle throughout the evening and dine, drink and party in the venue’s various rooms and courtyards. We also wanted to carry out the Hollywood theme throughout the evening and named our food stations and signature cocktails after classic films –“The Thin Man” and “The Vivacious Lady”– and had cocktail napkins featuring libation related quotes from old movies. During the cocktail hour, the band “Vintage Confidential” played standards from the 20s, 30s and 40s which helped to create the mood of a time gone by.

As one guest remarked, “may ‘Marry Me, Darling!’ run forever”!

Tell us about the gown and where/how you found it!

I found a few dresses I liked in Los Angeles, but decided it would be fun to at least look at dresses with my mom during a Mother’s Day trip to San Francisco. My mom found San Francisco based designer, Amy Kuschel online and her studio turned out to be a few blocks from our hotel. Having lived in San Francisco from junior high through high school, I liked the idea of wearing something that was made and designed in the city and loved Amy’s designs. My mom, sister and two close friends and I had a wonderful appointment with Teresa at Amy’s studio. Teresa was very warm and when I told her about our old Hollywood themed wedding and showed her photos of the venue, she emerged with a wedding dress that was perfect for me and our wedding. As soon as I put on the dress, it just felt “right” and I loved the special details like the slit in the front, jeweled belt, cap sleeves and plunging back. Serendipitously my dress is called “Rita” after Hollywood starlet, Rita Hayworth. As a fellow redhead, I’ve long considered Hayworth a style icon and even dressed up as her at age 9 at costume party — an overly ambitious costume at that age as no one had a clue who I was. Down the street from our wedding venue lies the aptly named “Hayworth” theater. Some of my favorite photographs from the wedding were taken in front of the Hayworth’s marquee. Since there are few opportunities in life, when you get away with a “costume change”, for the dancing I changed into a beaded cocktail dress purchased from Neiman Marcus that evoked art deco glamour.

What were some touches added to make it personal?

There were a lot of personalized details that went into the day. One of our favorites was our “program” which was designed to look like an old Hollywood gossip magazine. Featured inside was a one line biographical fact about each guest in attendance that somehow related to entertainment. This was a great surprise for our guests and it sparked many wonderful connections and conversations at the wedding. We had a fun time working on this project together and end up learning some new things about our friends and family in the process! This project would not have been possible without two very dear friends who helped with the art direction, copy editing and printing.

Another meaningful detail was the inclusion of my grandmother who passed away a few months before the wedding. Since she and I were very close, I knew I wanted to honor her in some way. After she passed, we discovered that she had a large collection of beautiful, vintage handkerchiefs in their original packaging. We displayed the laundered handkerchiefs along with a photo of my grandmother at the entrance to the ceremony, with a sign encouraging guests to keep a handkerchief for their happy tears.

What was the most memorable part of the day?

Although the day was filled with many special moments, without a doubt the highlight for us was the ceremony. We were fortunate to be married by a close friend who we worked with to craft a customized ceremony that was equal parts heartfelt emotion and humor. We wrote our own vows which we decided not to share with each other until we recited them in front of our friends and family at the wedding, which made them all the more meaningful. From Archie jogging down the aisle to the score of his favorite film, “Raiders of the Lost Ark” played on violin and guitar, to our “best boy” (a/k/a ring bearer) commencing the ceremony with a clapboard and our officiant, yelling “Action!” and a suspended chuppah made from my grandmother’s tablecloth, it was definitely not the typical wedding ceremony but it was very true to who we are as a couple and told our story perfectly. We both consider the ceremony to be our finest production to date!

Tell us how you met and became engaged.

As my husband likes to say, we met on a little place called “the internet.” Since we both love board games, on our first date we played an intense two person game of Scattergories. Claiming victory, Archie won a batch of my homemade dairy-free snickerdoodles. As a nod to our first date, I made the same cookies to include in the welcome bags for our out of town guests, with a little note explaining their significance.

We love to entertain by hosting game nights at our house. When Archie suggested having some friends over for a game night, I assumed it would be a regular night of fun with friends. Little did I know that Archie had much bigger plans (that our guests were in on) and that this would be no typical “game night”. In a way that recalled our first evening together, he proposed in the middle of a game that included a special customized card. The game was “Beyond Balderdash” and the category was a movie title: “Marry Me, Darling!” The invented movie had an answer, “A writer falls in love with a lawyer and a few years later gets down on one knee and asks, ‘Will you marry me?’.” After getting over my initial shock, when Archie did in fact get down on one knee, I said “Yes!”. It was such a thoughtful, personal and creative proposal and I’m still impressed that he was able to surprise me!

“Marry Me, Darling!” ended up being a pivotal part of the wedding’s design as guests were invited to attend the film’s “premiere.”
