You know that effortlessly cool girl? She’s both laid-back and elegant at the same time? Yep—that’s definitely Britta, whose wedding to Ty is a total extension of her relaxed, gorgeous vibe. Britta and Ty became engaged in the south of France. So amazing, right?! Naturally, they went with a “french antique” theme which they incorporated into a day filled with meaningful touches. From the head table candlesticks, to the bride’s veil, each wedding detail has a story and Alexandra Steele captured it all.  We love how Alexandra’s film photography adds to that effortless, antique elegance of Britta and Ty’s big day.

What made the wedding special and unique?

We wanted to get married in a place that was meaningful and true to us. We couldn’t think of a more perfect place than Ty’s best friend’s parents’ house that he pretty much grew up in. Their Iowa estate was so charming and surrounded by the most beautiful trees and even a pond! We also made sure our wedding was full of personal touches to make it our own. Our “head table” was Ty’s parents’ first dining table after they got married, our head table candlesticks were Ty’s grandmother’s and my veil was Ty’s mother’s – just to name a few. I’m an antique dealer, so it was important to me that we incorporated antique pieces that were a part of our family’s personal collection. I was also lucky that Ty let me pretty much take the reins and plan the entire wedding. It was a labor of love, but I wouldn’t have had it any other way. We not only designed our own wedding invitations, but printed and cut every single one! We got great joy from knowing that every touch was hand done and curated by us. Most importantly, we wanted every guest to get a sense of “us” through all the special personal touches.

Tell us about the gown and where/how you found it!

It’s a funny story about the hunt for my wedding dress, actually. I initially wanted a black wedding dress because I didn’t want to look like every other bride. I’d scoured every bridal magazine and wedding dress show, and I just didn’t think a traditional dress it was for me. After telling Ty my vision was for the dress, he politely suggested I get a “fitted ivory” dress. I then realized that you should probably look like the bride on your wedding day. I luckily found Le Soie Bridal and found the perfect dress for our vintage theme.

What was the most memorable part of the day?

The most memorable part was probably me having a Freudian slip during our vows and saying, I promise to “control” you, instead of “console”. That was a good laugh. And of course, the best man speech. Ty has twin older brothers and their speech was priceless. They started by rolling up to the dance floor in a four-wheeler while Thin Lizzy’s song “Jail Break” played. Then they proceeded to “apologize” for all the things they did to Ty growing up. One of them being, tying him to a pole in his underwear and then leaving him. Everyone was falling off their chairs laughing, including us. They then ended their speech with a role play of how Ty and I met (acting as Ty and myself) that was unforgettable. We’ve watched their speech many times since the wedding and it still makes us laugh until it hurts.

Tell us how you met and became engaged.

Ty and I met while I was managing the vintage furniture store in Santa Monica in 2009. He had Yelped furniture stores and accidentally wandered in not knowing it was a girlie furniture store. He then feigned interest in a bookshelf we had for about two weeks, as it gave him an excuse to come in and see me. When I finally told him I couldn’t hold the shelf anymore, he came in and asked me out. He later admitted buying a bookshelf the evening we met from an office store for $40. We now own that special vintage bookshelf, as it was too meaningful to let go.

We got engaged in the south of France (Aix-en-Provence) after being there for a film festival that Ty was featured in. I had no idea he was planning to propose while we were away, which is strange, because I had even picked out my 1920’s engagement ring about eight months before. After leaving the film festival, (and he won!) we made a plan to spend a few days in a beautiful chateau in Aix. Just before we arrived, we were stopped at a light and two guys on scooter drove up to our car and quickly jumped off and tried to open our back door in an attempt to take our luggage. Thankfully, our doors were locked so nothing was taken – most importantly the ring in Ty’s backpack! Once we got to the Chateau we wandered through the gardens and came across this lavender field and that’s where he proposed. It was absolutely perfect and unexpected. We then decided on a “French Antique” wedding theme to incorporate our engagement into the wedding.

Michael and Valerie are a crazy beautiful couple that met while in college, but spent several years afterward dating while separated by an entire continent! Love stories like this always make our hearts go pitter patter, and we just couldn’t resist sharing this one with you today! We absolutely love the Seattle area venue, Sodo Park by Herban Feast and just can’t get enough of the gorg details planned by Janel Schlit including the blue suits, lush white florals by McKenzie Powell and the photos from Kate Price Photography.

What made the wedding special and unique?

It was a true amalgamation of our lives, loves, and families. The ceremony (performed by Michael’s Uncle) combined cherry-picked traditions that were meaningful to us and represented where we’ve been and where we were going. We wanted everything about the ceremony to be honest to who we are and what marriage meant. We also wrote our own vows, which mixed our promises to each other with a little fun. The day felt true to us, and we will never forget it.

Tell us about the gown and where/how you found it!

I tried on many exquisitely beautiful dresses, but I felt most myself in this simple and sparkly Reem Acra gown. My mom came to see me in New York from Seattle and we scoured the City until we found the perfect dress at Saks. Jill, my consultant, acted as a surrogate mother to make the dress perfect after my mom flew back home. A lot of love and attention went into the dress, and I am grateful.

What were some touches added to make it personal?

The ceremony included an Irish hand-binding ritual in which our hands were tied with fabric. The fabric we used were pieces of our mothers’ wedding dresses, our fathers’ shirts, and the groom’s step-father’s tie. And all the pieces were sewn together by the Bride’s Grandmother and Groom’s Aunt. It was a really colorful special touch, and now we have a memento from the day that we’ll keep forever.

We also wrote notes to each guest to read when they sat down for dinner. It was a lot of work beforehand, but it was really important to us to tell each guest individually what it meant to us to have them there. We didn’t get to spend nearly enough time with each guest that day, so we were happy to have had a chance to say what we wanted through our notes.

What was the most memorable part of the day?

Seeing the people we love most in the world all in the same place at the same time. That was the greatest gift we could ever imagine. And it made for one incredible party. (My dad ended up spinning on his back on the dance floor. Priceless.)

Tell us how you met and became engaged.

We met our freshman year of college at Georgetown, and became close friends. Sophomore year, we started dating. That began a decade of growing up together. We were on opposite coasts after graduation and spent years finding weekends to travel across the Country. After we made our home in New York City, Michael brought all of our family and friends from across the country to our favorite local bar and surprised me with a proposal in front of everyone. It was perfect.

Whenever we see a wedding that was designed by Bustle Events, we get excited! Their work is always so gorgeous, and when you combine that with a photographer like Michele Beckwith and florals from Mandolin Flowers, you kind of can’t not love EVERYTHING. Oriana and Nate’s wedding at Los Altos History Museum is no exception. We absolutely love all the delicate details, lush flowers, and al fresco reception.

What made the wedding special and unique?

One of the things I was most excited about was getting ready with my children and marrying my best friend. Nate surprised me with a Tiffany Atlas bracelet that I wore to complete my look. I worked closely with Erin from Bustle Events and Mandolin Flowers to create the details and florals in a soft palette and accents of gold. The florist draped passion vines down the tables, and each place setting was completed with custom stationary from Aerialist press.

So my wedding gown is actually a funny story. I originally had a Lazaro dress, but felt it just wasn’t the one and ended up getting a new dress shortly before the wedding, a Monique Lhuillier. It fit like a glove and added a bid of beaded drama to the look with those flared hip details and shape. Overall the look I was going for was soft, with a little bit of glamour.

We met and fell in love in college. We raised their little children together in San Francisco, before moving to Berkeley to finish our studies.

Quynh and Ben’s wedding was a global affair as they hosted friends and family from all over the world, including Canada, Hong Kong, Spain, and Los Angeles. Their gorgeous wedding planned by Meggie Francisco Events  was held at Four Seasons Resort and Club, Las Colinas pampered guests in a glamorous affair that just oozed elegance! We know you are going to love the images shot by Tracy Enoch Photography.

What made the wedding special and unique?

The atmosphere inside the church and at the Four Seasons ballroom was filled with love and unconditional support from our family and dearest friends. It meant a lot for us to have our grandparents with us, especially his grandma who flew all the way from Hong Kong at the age of 85 to be with us.

What was unique was our tea ceremony at his parents home right before the Rehearsal Dinner. There were approximately 100 people in attendance (some flew in from Hong Kong, Canada, Spain and LA). It was the most intimate evening for the both of us.

The gown designer is Ezoani, fit and flare mermaid style with lace and tulle. I found it at Circle Park Bridal with my mom and sister. My amazing mom sews so I got her to fix the dress (many times) to fit my body the way I wanted to fit!

What were some touches added to make it personal?

My favorite color combination is gold, ivory, blush so I had the flowers, the chairs and the Photo Booth backdrop to fit the theme. I also love dahlias, peonies and astilbes so those were the main flowers in our bouquets. The music were mixed with some jazzy tunes and some classics from Elton John, The Beatles, Bee Gees, etc. At the cocktail hour we also had Jennifer Perryman play a few Bossa Nova.
What was the most memorable part of the day?

Since Ben and I skipped “the first look”, that moment when we saw each other for the first time at church was the most memorable. Everyone started crying when Ben began to tear up as I walked in.

We met at a graduation pool party dying the summer of 2012. The next day Ben asked me out to dinner and ever since then we hung out everyday. After a year and a half of dating, he surprised me with a trip to Paris. He then proposed in our home when we got back from our Paris trip on Christmas Day. That same night we announced the big news at Ben’s parents Christmas party.

What made the wedding special and unique?

I loved how intimate and personal the wedding felt. The day was a true extension of my husband and myself, from the music to the decor. It was extremely challenging to have kept the guest list under fifty, but I loved that we were able to spend time with each individual person that night. The venue was extremely special because it’s in my hometown area and I remember my mother telling me years ago, “I hope that you’ll get married here.” I was so excited for Carlos’ family and friends to explore where I grew up!

Also, Jessica Tocko from A Polished Plan was incredible. She made the entire process from beginning to end so enjoyable. I’ll never forget the moment I walked into the venue and saw my vision so beautifully executed thanks to the team at A Polished Plan.

Tell us about the gown and where/how you found it!

Choosing the gown was overwhelming for me! I probably tried on fifty and felt like I could have continued trying them on forever. There are so many beautiful options out there and eventually I just said, “Ok, I feel amazing in this and it’s sparkly, so I’m done!” I found the dress at House of Botticelli in Bronxville, where my sister in law found her dress 15 years ago. I loved that it was from a NYC designer, Paula Varsalona, who does all her work in-house.

What were some touches added to make it personal?

My father is a glassblower and sculptor. He’d made a gorgeous handblown wedding goblet with two stems that Carlos and I drank out of and toasted to in unison. Our wedding favors were hand blown pyramids also made by my father, meant to be placed in your home or office to attract good luck. One of my favorite DIY elements were the escort feathers, which were dipped in gold glitter and placed in a box of moss. We love seeing the feathers and pyramids displayed in our friend’s homes!

What was the most memorable part of the day?

After the ceremony and pictures, Carlos and I snuck up to a lofted section of the venue for a private moment together. We looked down on the setup just as the candles were being lit, right before guests were to arrive for cocktails. We sipped champagne and looked at each other with big goofy smiles thinking, “We are married! Look at our wedding! This is really happening!” It was a sweet moment and a great suggestion from a friend who said to take some time alone together to reflect on the glory of it all.

Tell us how you met and became engaged.

Carlos and I met during the summer of 2011 in the middle of an epic heat wave. We had both escaped NYC and were at a pool party in Sag Harbor. With a little encouragement from my best friend, I swam up to Carlos and introduced myself. He claims he was about to do the same but there’s no denying that I was totally the initiator! We spent the afternoon talking in the pool until we were prunes and then went out dancing that night. He immediately took me out to dinner the very next night when we returned to the city and we’ve been inseparable from that weekend on. On Carlos’ birthday nearly 2 years after we met, he proposed at home by tying a pink ribbon onto our cat Eleanor’s collar that read, “Will you please marry my Dad?” It has truly been nothing short of a fairytale since day one together!

What made the wedding special and unique?

What made our wedding special and unique was the fact that I planned it all. I had a vision of every single detail that I wanted and spent every single weekend finding and collecting pieces to add to our wedding décor details. If it wasn’t for my god mother to put my thoughts to life and make it happen the wedding details would not be as amazing as it was, she nailed every single detail and truly captured the nautical theme wedding I had always envisioned!

Tell us about the gown and where/how you found it!

After numerous wedding gown appointments my mom suggested to check out Davids Bridal as a last chance. I agreed. It was just me and my mom that day and I must have tried on at least 10 dresses and the one I picked was originally the very first dress I tried on, after hours pass by you tend to forget what dresses you have tried on. Well needless to say it came back around and I ended up trying it on and both my mom and I cried, it was the one!

What were some touches added to make it personal?

A few touches that made our wedding personal was we had our dear friend Marcus marry us which made it truly special because he really knew us and in engaged us not only to each other but to our friends and family that attended and made it very personal. Also, my husband and I wrote our own vows to each other which was very special.

What was the most memorable part of the day?

Most memorable part of the day was me waiting on top of the stairs to meet my father to walk me down the aisle. As I was walking down and he captured “his” first look he bursted into tears, I have never seen my father cry so for me I lost it! Of course I got myself together and walking hand in hand with my father down the aisle to marry my husband was truly a feeling that was so memorable and filled with love and happiness, I will never forget that amazing moment.

Tell us how you met and became engaged.

Well I knew of my husband in high school, I had a secret crush on him! He was a couple years older so he had no clue who I was. Years later and after college we were introduced through some friends and the rest was history, we fell in love! Four years later on February 13th which we all know was the day before Valentine’s Day (he threw me off guard!) I came home to a house lit up with candles and flowers everywhere! (It was just breath taking) He got on one knee and proposed, it was the best day and truly special.

Christina and Mike selected Salt Air Farm as the backdrop for their outdoor garden wedding. The scenery was definitely picturesque, but we love how the couple encouraged their guests to interact with the farmland—yard games in the lawn, tractor rides and fruit picking. How often does one pick their own nectarines at a wedding…or ever?! We’re so excited to share Photography by Verdi’s beautiful images of Christina and Mike’s big day.

What made the wedding special and unique?

Everything! The location, the flowers, the colors, the details, the family, the friends, the weather… Perhaps the most unique aspect about it was that it was so comfortable for everyone in attendance but wasn’t so overly lax as to be considered a “casual” affair. The nectarine picking since we were at an active fruit farm was really memorable for our friends with kids, but the lawn games during and after cocktail hour were another fun activity to get our guests in the swing of things!

Tell us about the gown and where/how you found it!

My dress was an understated but beautiful vintage lace gown I purchased at at a benefit for Brides for Breast Cancer. I had a fantastic time with my bridesmaids. We enjoyed champagne and hors d’oeuvres while scouring their selection and unanimously selected the dress I wore to my wedding! All proceeds from the gowns sold that evening go toward research to prevent, treat, and cure breast cancer–it’s really nice, considering how much we all spend on our weddings, that some of it can go to a good cause.salt_air_farm_wedding_rustic_decor_ideas_0005 (s wat's conflicted copy 2015-05-07)

What were some touches added to make it personal?

One personal touch was including our nephews and nieces in the ceremony! My husband rebuilt an antique wagon to have the children pulled down the aisle, right up to where we were married, under a beautiful weeping willow and draped fabric. We also hand-made lemon-accented center pieces to match our yellow accent color (and lemon bars from Magnolia for dessert!) and we even had fresh Sangria made from fruit on the farm!

What was the most memorable part of the day?

The single most memorable part might have been when our Best Man and Maid of Honor gave the toast together. It was so touching and heartfelt, and had some humor to it but was just so sweet and happy and loving that it was impossible not to have it make a mark on our memories forever.

Shane and Kristen’s wedding was bright and vibrant, full of energy from the guests that really just wanted to have a great time celebrating the happy couple. The venue, El Encanto, was the perfect backdrop for this perfect spring day. Secluded in the hills of Santa Barbara, everyone was able to just relish in the beauty of everything around them. What made the wedding special and unique?

Our wedding party was composed of 11 groomsmen, 8 bridesmaids, 3 flower girls, and 1 ring bearer. Go big or go home, right? What made the occasion so special was that there were no introductions. Joe and I shared the same group of friends, and family members in the wedding party had been well-acquainted for years. It was a party from the start.

Tell us more about the gown and where/how you found it!

I always knew I wanted a lace gown. One of the first things I did after we got engaged was start the hunt for the perfect dress. I spent a lot of time looking online and found a few that I wanted to try on. The dress had to be the perfect mix of elegance and class with an antique flair. When I put my dress on, the first thing I noticed was how light it was. We were having a summer wedding and I knew I didn’t want to be too hot or feel too weighed down. There was another dress that I was going back-and-forth on, but I couldn’t get over the lace on my dress. It was like nothing I had ever seen before. It was thick and had almost a crochet look to it. It made the dress have a hint of 70’s flower child, while still maintaining a subtle sophistication that wasn’t overpowering. Some brides try on hundreds of dresses. For me, it only took five. Sometimes you just have to trust your gut.

What were some touches added to make it personal?

Our wedding was full of unique elements that made the celebration as a whole more personal for our family and friends. Joe’s uncle, whom we are very close with, is a deacon and was able to help officiate the wedding and read us our vows. He also delivered an excellent homily that was so much more meaningful having witnessed first-hand the type of relationship Joe and I have. At the reception, I tried to add small details that our guests could relate to. The guestbook was on a table that also displayed wedding pictures of three generations of brides and grooms on both Joe’s side and mine. Instead of having table numbers for a guest to report to, the tables were named after an exciting place that each person had likely spent time with me and Joe together. Table names included family vacation locations, skiing destinations, and spectacular beaches or hikes that our family and friends experienced with the two of us.

What was the most memorable part of the day?

Everyone tells you that your wedding day will fly by. I couldn’t disagree more. I soaked in and enjoyed every second of it. Every girl dreams of a bright and sunny, rain free wedding day. Well it didn’t rain on August 2; it poured. What I’ll never forget is how we didn’t let it ruin any of our fun. As a designer, the one thing that I wanted to be able to gush over in later days was my pictures. And let me tell you, we had an angel with us that day. The second we came out of the church, the rain halted. We all rushed to the venue to try and get a few pictures in before the skies opened up again. We were able to take every single picture that I had envisioned, and once we were done, it started pouring again. It literally stopped raining for 1 hour that day; the 1 hour that started from the time they opened the doors to the church to the beginning of happy hour at the reception. If that doesn’t give you goose bumps, I don’t know what will.

Tell us how you met and became engaged.

Joe and I have known each other since the 2nd grade. We grew up in Lunenburg, a really small town in Massachusetts (and an even smaller school) where everyone knew everybody. We started dating our senior year of high school and haven’t looked back since. We love to spend our time outdoors whenever possible. Joe proposed to me on the summit of Mount Osceola in New Hampshire on our five year dating anniversary. We were scouting out the area for the ideal place to eat lunch. Joe brought me to a small alcove off to the side and popped the question after some delicious PB & J’s. What is cooler than telling your family and friends that you got engaged on the top of a mountain? I spent the entire climb down gazing at the new rock on my finger, in disbelief that I was 22 years old and engaged to my best friend.
