With new designs that roll in each week, we thought we’d take the chance to share a little more of our favorite Modern Wedding Invitation finds from The American Wedding. One thing we love in particular about their website, is the ability to order not only a full stationery suite (including affordable letterpress invitations and pocket wedding invitations), but also full matching sets of every wedding detail you can imagine! For example, here are just a few of the fun things you can nab with the Hearts & Arrows series, such as wine glasses, coasters, napkins, and wedding toasting glasses:

hearts-arrows2

Also, we often hear about how a bride’s parents want a formal invitation, but the bride wants something more fun and creative.  When you can’t reach a compromise on a design, American Wedding usually suggests that the bride pick out a save-the-date and wedding day stationery that are more her style and to select an invitation that is more indicative of the formality of the event.  They can be different designs completely, but work really beautifully together by using the same paper, ink and font choices throughout. For example, here is a combo of the Laurel Monogram Invitation with the Better Together series.

bettertogether

The American Wedding is currently offering 40% Off All Wedding Invitations*, Shower and Rehearsal Dinner Invites.  The offer applies to the invitations, not the accessory pieces.  Code: WED40  Offer expires March 9th, 2015.

Tell us about the gown and where/how you found it!

Dress shopping was one of my favorite parts of the wedding planning process. I was lucky enough to have my maid of honor and mom by my side the whole day. I made sure to go into the process with an open mind; I wanted to try on as many types as possible to really make sure I wasn’t missing anything spectacular. I found my grown at the last stop of the day, Panache Bridal in Beverly Hills. I actually almost didn’t even try it on; The hanger didn’t do it any justice, but my maid of honor made sure I still tried it. As soon as the sales associate zipped it on me, I knew it was the one. What made it even better was that the salon also had my maid of honor’s wedding dress in dress in stock. (She got married 2 months before Steve and I, and I was her maid of honor as well, which made this extra special). Panache let her try on her wedding dress with me. We had champagne and took lots of pictures. It was so special to be each others maid of honors and have our wedding dresses on together. The dress I ended up selecting was The Sania by Rivini.

What made the wedding special and unique?

When it came to the details, I was especially inspired by where Steve and my relationship first flourished, our alma mater, Carnegie Mellon. I named tables after buildings on campus and had custom laser cut signs made to hang above tables, rather than using standard table numbers. These table assignments were displayed on a handcrafted board with flowers and moss, using golden mirrors to display the names. A couple of my bridesmaids and I made this feature piece, and my ultra talented friend hand wrote all the names on the mirrors. Each place setting also had a representation of where we first met. A handmade scottie-dog (the school’s mascot) sat at each place with a calligraphy place card around the neck. The dog was originally designed and sculpted by a friend. My family and I then slaved away make plaster molds, sanding and painting the dogs (we made almost 300!). This detail quickly became a signature design at the event. We also added golden frames with baby pictures of Steve and I along each tablescape.

What were some touches added to make it personal?

At the head table, a DIY Marquee sign reading “Mr. & Mrs” was the primary feature. I made sure to use my great grandmothers candelabras at this table to make it extra special as well, as It was important to me to use family heirlooms throughout the wedding. My late grandmother’s rosary was wrapped around my bouquet along with my sorority pin to add a personal and meaningful touch. I also carried a gorgeous vintage Judith Leiber Bag of my mothers as my something borrowed. I personally designed all the stationary to set the tone for the event, including save the dates, invites and menus. I also designed the wedding favor, a custom cookbook with family recipes from both Steve and I.

What was the most memorable part of the day?

We chose to not do a grand exit, because we wanted to make sure we experienced every part of the night. So instead, our band played “The Parting Glass”, a traditional Irish ballad (a special nod to our Irish culture), as the last song. Steve and I danced in the center of the room and all of our friends and family surrounded us in a circle, swaying and singing along. It was so special to see all our loved ones surround us with so much support and joy. It was the perfect ending to an amazing day, and it really brought things to a perfect closure. This was one of the only moments not caught on camera, but it will forever be engrained in my mind.

Tell us how you met and became engaged.

Steve and I met during Freshman Orientation at Carnegie Mellon University. The event was called Playfair, and it was basically a giant icebreaker for the incoming class. Steve and I were assigned to the same group at the event. We clicked instantly, but just remained friends for about a year until we officially started dating. We dated for almost 5 years before Steve popped the question. We had planned a couples trip to Dallas to see my best friend (and soon to be maid of honor) and her fiancé at the time (now husband). I was totally clueless that this would be the weekend he would ask me to marry him. That morning we went out for bbq and followed the meal by going to the Dallas Arboretum. Little did I know, Steve had planned an elaborate scenario where a clown (dressed in a yellow suit with no makeup) would be pretending to give out balloon animals in the park where we were to get engaged. He would make a series of wedding rings for me and then give up, saying that he didn’t have any that were the right fit. At that point he’d be on one knee with the ring that (hopefully) was the perfect fit. The balloon artist really was a clown though. He brought balloons that were already inflated, illegal to have in a place that was technically coded as a park, and got kicked out at the front entrance. So instead, Steve turned to me in the middle of having a photo taken of us and got on one knee. The setting was beautiful and it was so great to have the whole thing captured on film!

You guys! Our favorite event of the year is quickly approaching and we are insanely giddy. It is time for The Cream Event, which by the way, is THE perfect way to kick off wedding planning for all you newly engaged gals. Why? For starters, The Cream brings together the best of the best in the wedding industry (get it? CREAM of the crop?) to showcase their wares and skills in a way that feels a lot like a wedding–complete with cocktails, tiny bites, tons of fashion and style, oh, and a crazy fab dance party. Plus, to top it all off this year, in collaboration with Wanderable, The Cream is giving away a 7 day Paris honeymoon. This is reason enough to get your tickets and come party with us on March 15th! Ready for this year’s design theme? We love.

Did your ears perk up when we mentioned Wanderable? They should have! Wanderable is a new kind of honeymoon registry that lets you register for experiences, over things.  Chartering a sailboat in Thailand? No problem.  Sunbathing in the Caribbean? You got it. But there is so much more to this honeymoon registry than just your dream trip.  With over 2,800 curated experiences in 180 different cities, they’re the perfect solution for the modern couple who doesn’t need anymore “stuff.”  The best part is that each one of their experience providers is vetted by their team— and with over 4.5 stars on TripAdvisor, so you know you’re getting the best of the best.

Alright ladies. Listen up, I have a little story for you. About a month before our wedding, I finally realized it was time to figure out what I was going to do about a ring for Bryan. So off I went to the jeweler with the naive little idea that this shopping trip was no big deal. I quickly found a super simple band I liked, and then inquired about the price. Cue JAW ON FLOOR. Over $1,000 for a metal band? Major sticker shock you guys. We went back to the drawing board and discovered Tungsten. Because we were pressed for budget, we picked something we liked and figured we’d work it out later, but guess what? Bryan LOVES his ring. This thing, I promise you, is insanely durable! It honestly catches my eye all the time because it’s so shiny. I’m not kidding, that puppy looks brand new and Bryan has been banging his around for almost two years now. Which leads me to our new recent discovery: Tungsten World.

This online store has a TON of options for alternative wedding bands like tungsten (yes!), cobalt, titanium, and black zirconium. Their design options range from classic to super unique and not only are these materials durable, but they are much more affordable than traditional metals. Not only that, but Tungsten World works closely with a US jewelry manufacturer allowing couples to create custom tungsten wedding bands using a variety of precious metal inlays, diamonds, gemstones and custom image engraving (like fingerprint engraving–cool, right?).

FP_Rings1

Tungsten World is running a really great contest and the winner will get a custom laser engraved Fingerprint Ring using your actual fingerprints. To enter, just like Tungsten World on Facebook, and be sure to leave a comment and let them know which Tungsten World ring is your fave! The winner will be picked at random!

You can find them at Trumpet and Horn! And a very special thanks to artists Jenny Sanders of Graceline Art for her watercolor of our wreath and to Lisa Rae of The Dancing Pine for her water color of the lovely Pantone strips. You heard us right. Goddess. Today, we’re talking registries, and one thing we’ve learned is that the task of picking out goods for your new abode can be a tad overwhelming. But thanks to our friends over a Zola, we’re going to give you 4 tips for succeeding at this whole registry business. Are you ready? Get your notepad!

Step one: Make your registry personal.

Max and Emma Registry

Not only does your registry reflect your personal sense of style, but it is also a reflection of the two of you! Love cooking? Can’t wait to host friends? Prefer to travel instead? Your registry is a great way to tell a part of your story, so be sure to add fun notes, unique collections, personal pictures and a custom URL. Is it no surprise to you that Zola makes all this easy? And cute?

Step two: Register for what you really want.

Editorial_1214_KateSpade_02

Don’t feel forced into the standard mixer routine–although no judgement–that’s a killer gift and we are obsessing over this copper one:

Editorial_Copper_Mixer_01

Feel the freedom to explore all the other fun options you can add in too. What about a mixology class or an outdoor hike? Do you have your eye on a super pricey couch or heirloom china? Consider group gifting to make those pricey options a possibility. Honeymoon and cash funds (for that down payment maybe?) are always super great additions that allow for plenty of freedom! PLUS, with Zola, those handmade unique one-of-a-kind items from local stores or niche sites can easily be added to your registry with the “Add to Zola” Button!

Honeymoon_Travel_01 Editorial_Eccolo_tray_bar_02

Step three: Get inspiration and help when you need it.

Collection - 30 Most Popular Gifts Editorial - Credit to Caroline Tran

We know you love all the pretty things, but what do you actually NEED for your new married life? It’s easy to get distracted by All. The. Cocktail. Glassware. Do you really need a glass set just for serving mojitos? Okay, maybe, but the point is that you might be forgetting some of the essentials. So, enter the Zola Buying Guide, which breaks down what you need from each category. They’ll help you even further with their Starter Collections which are there to help kick start your inspiration. We love that you can browse curated collections based on the essentials, your style, or interests. Plus, Zola’s Registry Concierge is always there to help you + your guests, and will even import your other registries–because we know that for those of you that have already registered, you’re feeling a little registry envy.

Editorial - Credit to Ira Lippke Editorial_Bormioli_Floral_07

Step four: Make it easy on yourself and let technology do the hard work and heavy-lifting.

iPhone AppFor most of us busy gals, technology is a huge help in keeping us organized and sane. Where would life be without our smart phones? Seriously. So of course, Zola has an easy to use iPhone App, so you can register for anything using on-the-go with features like a barcode scanner, mobile alerts, and Registry Planner. With the Gift Tracker you’ll know who gave you what, which is a HUGE a lifesaver when it’s time for thank you’s. With their Virtual Exchange it is easy to swap your gifts for ones you want before they are sent! And while we’re on the subject of shipping, if your living room is piled high with DIY projects for the wedding, or if you’re planning on moving right after the big day, you can opt for the Send It Later feature, which allows YOU to decide exactly when you want your gifts shipped.

Le sigh. All so easy, right? We heart Zola! And guess what? Grey Likes Weddings readers will receive $25 to spend on Zola when they set up their wedding registry on Zola. New registries must be started (but not necessarily published) between 2/24/15 – 5/24/15. Credits will be placed into the couple’s Zola account 4 weeks after a couple’s registry is published live.

*Zola is a sponsor of Grey Likes, but seriously, we love them! All opinions are bloggers’ own.

Katie and Patton decided that Seaside Beach, Florida was the perfect location for their summer wedding, particularly because it is where the bride, Katie, had spent her summer family vacations growing up. With a location that held plenty of sentimental value and an intimate list of close family and friends in attendance, it made for the perfect day to celebrate the union of these two Texans. We can’t get enough of the gorgeous florals by Nouveau Flowers and details put together It’s a Shore Thing Wedding & Event Planning. We know you are going to love the photos by pure7studios!

What made the wedding special and unique?

We got married in Seaside, Florida which is where I grew up going on family vacations every summer. It was a small, intimate gathering with only close family and friends. It was unique in that we planned the whole thing in six weeks… And it was perfect. (Kudos, Jen from It’s a Shore Thing)

Tell us about the gown and where/how you found it!

My dress was a custom couture gown by Nardos Imam of Dallas, Texas. After an unsuccessful wedding dress shopping spree in Austin, Texas, two of my best friends joined me in Dallas for round two. Nardos was our third and final stop. I think all of us knew the second we walked in that “the dress” was inside. The salon itself and the dresses were exquisite. It was so refreshing. Nardos’ design was stunning and perfect, tailoring it to every request & perfecting every detail. It was so me. The flowy organza back was my favorite part of the wedding, besides the groom.

What were some touches added to make it personal?

I’m pretty sure Patton married me for my dog, Boogie, so naturally she had to be a part of the ceremony. Adorned in a neck wreath of flowers, she strolled down the aisle as our Flower Pug. After 10 years, she finally got a daddy…a big day for us all. Also, our rings were both family heirlooms. I have his grandmother’s wedding ring and he has my grandfather’s.

What was the most memorable part of the day?

The dance floor. We had a great band, plenty of libations and lots of glow-in-the-dark flair. Not a soul was sitting. It was so much fun.

Tell us how you met and became engaged.

Patton and I first met through mutual friends during sxsw, a music fest in Austin, Texas. He was living in Houston at the time. Fast forward to the next music fest, Austin City Limits, where we re-united and then began dating. He eventually moved to Austin “for work,” fell in love with me and Boogie and proposed after two years of courtship.

We honestly hadn’t talked about it the proposal and Patton had never asked about rings etc. so, it was actually a surprise for me. It was a Friday night and we were going to dinner at my favorite restaurant. I came over to his place (Boogie in tote) dressed and ready for date night. He went to his room for a sec and Boogie came out with a small bag & flowing orchids tied around her neck (or what she has of a neck) with a satin bow. I was a little confused cause like I said, I wasn’t really expecting it. He got down on his knee, opened the little bag and pulled out his grandmother’s ring and proposed. Then we popped bottles, called everyone and eventually went to dinner and celebrated.

Today, we wanted to start off with a little appetizer of inspiration for you ladies. We love the style of this couple, shot by Krista Mason Photography. We think the look is perfect for a rehearsal dinner, co-ed shower (we’re thinking a “Stock the Bar” shower complete with cocktails and appetizers) or better yet–a great date night!

We’d love to know, for those of you that are engaged, what are some of the fun activities you’ve got on the books throughout the next few months of planning? Now’s the time to bulk up on a few key dresses! And when it’s time for a date night, do you take the time to dress up? We think every once in a while, your fella will love it if you toss aside those jeans and opt for something a little sexier, no? Any tips for making date nights a little more glam?

Today we are delighted to introduce you to SWC Consultants, based out of San Francisco, California. Their team offers a range of services to help make sure your wedding plans come off without a hitch! With a commitment to making sure you not only love how your wedding turns out, but the processing of planning along the way! We’re going to let them tell you a little about their philosophy, and most importantly, make sure you know that you’ll receive $200 off any coordination package when you mention Grey Likes Weddings!

SWC-consultants-1“As wedding planners, SWC Consultants understands the constraints of budgets and wishes of a bride to be. It’s a big day and everything is a big deal. Whether it’s just the two of you, an intimate gathering of a few friends or a large party for 300, your wedding should reflect who you are as individuals and who you are as a couple. SWC Consultants, has vowed that every person we work with is given just that and nothing less.” SWC-consultants-2 SWC-consultants-3 SWC-consultants-4 SWC-consultants-5 “A wedding isn’t just about that one day. It’s also about the process and planning of it. It’s about bringing together everything you’ve worked so hard on and envisioned together and then seeing it unfold. You should be completely comfortable with whoever is helping you out during that time whether it’s for 12 months of just your wedding day.”SWC-consultants-6 SWC-consultants-7

“You should trust your team and be able to tell them anything you need to. That’s why we make it a priority to establish a relationship with every one of our clients. Whether you decide to hire us for the day of the wedding or for the entire year of planning, we make it a point to be involved as much as possible from the time you sign up until the big day. This is our passion and seeing the joy in our couples on their wedding day is what drives us to excellence.” SWC-consultants-8
