I want to become a society lady Rockin' a new rock?!

Aislinn and Jon’s wedding married multiple cultures and families living across the ocean from one another, so the couple figured if everyone was going to travel—make the destination one that everyone would want to vacation to. Enter Villa Medicea di Lilliano, a historic Tuscan villa overlooking the hills of wine country with a view of Florence in the distance. Event designer and coordinator, Super Tuscan Wedding Planners, brought in florist Flowers & Living to help create a stunning rooftop ceremony and Grey Collective member Art De Vie travelled with the couple from New Orleans to capture all the love and details in these beautiful images.

What made the wedding special and unique?

We decided on Italy as our destination wedding, since we were trying to marry multiple cultures and families living across the ocean from one another. We figured if we were making everyone travel, we should at least find a location people would want to come to. Our mutual favorite wine is also a Chianti Classico, so getting married in a Tuscan vineyard full of such wines was a dream! We didn’t have the opportunity to travel to Italy before the wedding, so we had to land on a venue and make all associated decisions without ever visiting the Villa in person. That made the revealing of the grounds the day before the wedding extra special! We were blown away by the beauty of it all – the pictures we had seen online really didn’t do the Villa justice. The aspect of our wedding most unique to us was that we had people from 7 countries and 6 different states – most of whom didn’t know each other before the wedding – come together and connect as if they were all old friends. Most of the members of our families (with the exception of our parents) had also never met beforehand, so it was quite special to see how well the group meshed and how much fun everyone had together.

Tell us about the gown and where/how you found it!

It was a Martina Liana fit and flare gown with a high neckline, sheer back with delicate lace details and pearl buttons. The dress had several layers to it, with ivory embroidered lace and stone tulle over a moscato-color gown and porcelain tulle illusion. I found it at Town and Country in New Orleans the week my parents came to visit for Thanksgiving from the Netherlands. It was the first time they met Jon’s parents, and I wanted to have at least one opportunity to go dress shopping together with my mother, and Jon’s mother and sister – so it was quite meaningful that I was able to find THE dress during the one day I had everyone with me!

What were some touches added to make the wedding personal?

We determined early on that we wanted someone we knew to perform our ceremony, and eventually decided to ask Aislinn’s Irish uncle who was also coincidentally an honorary Senator of the state of Louisiana – neatly representing both the Irish heritage of the bride and the Louisiana heritage of the groom! We tried to incorporate various elements from our different cultures in the wedding. We decided on a sit-down dinner in keeping with most European traditions, but we treated the speeches during dinner as most Southerners do the night before at the rehearsal – anyone who wanted to speak was invited to stand up and say a few words. Since our wedding was quite small (56 people), it made it very personal to get to hear from some of our dearest friends and family, without feeling like we had to limit the speech time. The party afterwards too incorporated both European and Southern elements – the dancing went on until 1:30 in the morning with your typical wedding music, interspersed with Irish tap dancing, Dutch folk songs, and the LSU Tigers marching band anthem. Our party favors were both a memento from the region (local olive oil and Limoncello), as well as Mardi Gras beads we had brought over from our home in New Orleans. We truly tried to mesh our separate backgrounds and experiences, making the wedding feel like it was anything but standard.

What was the most memorable part of the day?

Walking up the stairs to the rooftop terrace overlooking Tuscan wine country – and in the distance, Florence – where everyone was gathered for the ceremony. While the surroundings were unquestionably stunning, the only thing Aislinn remembers seeing as she walked down the aisle was Jon’s emotional face, and that she couldn’t stop the sudden onslaught of tears. It was a very touching moment because it just felt so surreal to be in the midst of that gorgeous environment, getting to say ‘I do” to each other, surrounded by so many of our favorite people who had traveled such a great distance to be there with us.

Tell us how you met and became engaged.

We met at Aislinn’s work, where Jon would regularly come to visit clients. Aislinn was sitting in her friend Mary’s office when Jon walked in to discuss matters of business with Mary. Before long, the conversation took a personal turn, and Aislinn wanted to know where Jon was from. He thought the answer of ‘north Louisiana’ was self-evident enough, but when Aislinn thought that meant somewhere near Kentwood (the home of Brittney Spears – which, as a newcomer to Louisiana, was really the only place outside of New Orleans that Aislinn was familiar with), Jon decided to draw a map on the whiteboard and explain the geography of Louisiana to the poor ignorant foreigner. He was, in fact, from a town nowhere near Kentwood. Mary – who would later be the Matron of Honor at our wedding – shrewdly observed the chemistry between us in those short 45 minutes, and quietly conspired with a friend of Jon’s to set us up on a group date. That group date ended in everyone else leaving well before midnight, and the two of us staying out together until 2 a.m. (on a Monday evening). We became engaged 2 years later while on vacation on the Greek island of Santorini. Jon proposed on the balcony of our room, with a bottle of wine, overlooking the Aegean sea. We then went out to celebrate and ended up partying with the locals until 6 a.m. We may have missed the vineyard tour we had planned for the next day, but it was worth it!

Cara and Cameron love traveling, music and trying new food and aptly sought inspiration for their destination wedding day from a William Shakespeare quote that reads “If music be the food of love, play on.” They planned an entire weekend of events in Austin, TX for their friends and family including a Bluegrass BBQ, a stunning ceremony at St. Mary’s Cathedral and a ballroom reception at Four Seasons Hotel Austin. Wedding coordination was by CAKE Event Company, romantic florals were by Color Theory Collective and calligraphy by Jen Krause CalligraphyAllie Lindsey Photography was on hand to capture all the details in these inspiring film images.

What made the wedding special and unique?

What really made our wedding special was that it wasn’t just the celebration on the wedding day, but an entire weekend of special events. We started off with group walk/run around Lady Bird Lake on Friday morning and in the evening, hosted a Bluegrass BBQ equipped with the best local BBQ from Leroy and Lewis and musical entertainment from a local Austin Bluegrass band, Steel Betty. The day after the wedding we hosted a Gospel Brunch at a cool office space where we enjoyed some Sunday gospel tunes and Austin’s famous Breakfast Tacos.

We currently live in Southern California and looked at many venues in our area, however nothing really felt like “us.” While visiting Austin, our home away from home, my brother suggested we visit St. Mary’s Cathedral and the Four Seasons on a whim. We had to laugh because as soon as we stepped foot into the church and the hotel, we knew that Austin was the place for us. Our friends and family are scattered throughout the United States, so it was also the perfect central meeting ground for all of our guests!

What I feel is most unique about our wedding weekend was that although there were over 180 guests, it still felt very intimate and personal. I loved being able to look around and see people who didn’t know each other one day earlier dancing together on the dance floor, laughing with each other and making those lasting memories that stick with you forever.

Growing up, I never had a true vision for my wedding dress. I teetered from lace to mermaid gowns to princess and A-line so when it came to actually try on dresses, I felt like I was all over the place! I scheduled appointments at a few different stores in Los Angeles, and when we got to Monique Lhullier, my mom, sister and I picked out a few dresses and headed into the fitting room. And then, there it was! It was like a match made in wedding Heaven…this beautiful dress hanging in the perfect lighting left behind by the previous soon-to-be bride trying on dresses. The instant I tried it on, I cried. I knew it was the dress for me. It was whimsical, romantic and elegant. The floral lace bodice that ran into a silk tulle skirt was stunning. It fit perfectly with my personality and romance of the day.

What were some touches added to make the wedding personal?

We love traveling, music and trying new food, and sought inspiration from a William Shakespeare quote that read “If music be the food of love, play on.” Throughout the weekend, we made sure that music was very much the constant theme and focus of our wedding festivities, whether it was the Bluegrass band at our welcome party, Drywater Band at our wedding, the playlist at our rehearsal dinner or the Gospel band at our brunch. Some other personal touches we added were a traditional Irish bagpiper that guided us from cocktail hour into our reception, our invitation suite I designed with my mom and sister, our sweet niece and nephews walking down the aisle, the “First Look” I got to have with my dad before we headed to the church, His and Her’s cocktails, a handwritten seating chart, handwritten name tiles and romantic floral arrangements of different flower, shapes and sizes.

What was the most memorable part of the day?

The most memorable part of the day was walking down the aisle to my groom. I was so excited to see Cameron for the first time and he looked so handsome (and excited) on the altar and the second we locked eyes, we both started crying. In that moment, I knew we would be together forever and there was no better feeling in the world!

Tell us how you met and became engaged.

We met through mutual friends and started dating shortly after. We would take weekly dates on the Santa Monica bluffs where we would pack a picnic and watch the sunset. Cameron and I have explored the world together and gone to many different countries to taste exotic foods. We love going to concerts and experiencing new things together.

During our Europe trip in 2016, our first stop was Paris, France. We started the day off with sightseeing and then had our first Afternoon Tea! After Tea, we walked over to the Pon de Bir-Hakeim, which has a beautiful view of the Eiffel Tower. As the sun was setting, Cameron got down on one knee and proposed. Little did I know, he also reached out to an American photographer living in Paris who captured everything on film! The next day, we flew to Barcelona to meet up with some of our friends from back home who had already known about the engagement! It was so special to be able to celebrate such an exciting time with both Cameron and some of our closest friends.

Maggie and Eli live in North Carolina, but celebrated their nuptials at at Eli’s family lake house in Michigan. 1928 Planning Co. designed the event which included details in a palette inspired by the scenery—berry-hues reflective of the vineyards and light blues that mirrored the serene colors of Lake Michigan. Invitations are by Sable and Gray, florals by Fresh Flowers by Anna and a cake by Sweet Mandy B. The couple loves the Danish concept of hygge (or coziness) and set out to incorporate the feeling into their day and we love that Kati Mallory Photo & Design captures it all so beautifully.

What made the wedding special and unique?

Eli and I live in North Carolina but had our wedding in Michigan, which was very stressful at times. Even though our wedding had almost 200 people, I wanted everyone to feel like it was an intimate party, so that’s where the planning began. I was really inspired by the lush greenery in southwestern Michigan and my color palette closely mirrored the surroundings: the vineyard (berry, burgundy) and Lake Michigan (light blues). There is something so peaceful in this region of the country – slightly chilly in September but surrounded by farms, vineyards, and the clear blue water.

We said our vows at Eli’s family lake house – a place that is always open to friends and family and is very special to us. Eli’s dad and aunt made the chuppah themselves. The covering was made from a piece of fabric from both families – a hand-quilted blanket made my my great-grandmother and Eli’s tallit (prayer shawl), which was a gift his late grandfather brought Eli from Israel. It represented the two families joining as one, and also as a reminder of the love and presence of the special people who are no longer with us. We exchanged our handwritten vows while overlooking Lake Michigan, and to look out during our ceremony and see all of our favorite people sitting on our front lawn was very special and emotional for us.

My dog Humphrey, whom I rescued 7 years ago and has moved across the county several times with us, was our ring bearer and walked down the aisle in his tux. He was also featured on the invitations, menus, signature cocktail, and on goodie bags – he was like our own wedding crest!

I wore a dress by Vera Wang. I tried on what felt like a million gowns and nothing felt quite right! I came across a gown on Instagram and knew immediately it was meant for me!  I had already been to Vera Wang but went back to try it on and the staff was so helpful. I wanted to customize the dress to my exact vision, and their seamstress executed it perfectly.  The dress was classic, yet modern, and the beading and ornate belt gave it an extra “wow” factor.

What were some touches added to make the wedding personal?

For the reception, I wanted it to be lit mostly by candlelight and filled with florals to give the night a cozy feel. We love the Danish concept of hygge (or coziness), and wanted to incorporate that feeling for our guests. I sourced almost every detail from incredible designers on Etsy and really enjoyed customizing several items.  One of my absolute favorite items were our place cards – each hand painted by Newly Scripted, and embedded in moss. Because I absolutely LOVE dessert, and I knew I wanted an entire dessert table with a non-traditional cake from my favorite bakery in Chicago, Sweet Mandy B’s. Eli & I lived in, met, and fell in love in Chicago, our pre-military home, and the dessert table was the perfect nod to our time there. Our cake was a banana cake with chocolate buttercream filling and vanilla buttercream frosting, and we also served cookies, cupcakes, and Sweet Mandy B’s famous rice crispy treats. They were to-die for! Another favorite unique touch for the reception were our koozies. Each side gave a nod to where we come from, with Eli’s side showing Illinois with “Congrats You Guys” and my side representing Arkansas (my home state) with “Congrats Y’all”.

Eli is an Army JAG Officer and we have many friends serving our country. Though we were sad some very close friends were deployed at the time, we were honored to have every branch of the military represented at our wedding.  Eli’s and my first dance was to “I Just Called to Say I Love You” by Stevie Wonder, a song he sang to me when he joined the military and we lived apart.

What was the most memorable part of the day?

It’s impossible to pick a favorite moment from the wedding day, but walking into the reception tent and seeing all of the details I had worked hard on come together was so special. Not just because of the design elements with plenty of warm candlelight, tons of flowers, and heat lamps keeping it warm, but because it was a room full of all our favorite people filling it.  Best feeling ever!

Alex and Drew had no doubt High Lonesome Barn at Devil’s Thumb Ranch was their perfect wedding venue—Drew was scoping it out before they were even engaged. The Colorado location played an important role in Alex’s childhood and inviting all their friends and family to there to celebrate their nuptials was a must. Calluna Events planned a day filled with voluminous lavender-hued florals and cascading greens by Cori Cook Floral Design, periwinkle paper goods by Whimsy Design Studio and personalized rustic details throughout. Jamee Photography was behind the lens and captured all the beautiful moments in these stunning images.

What made the wedding special and unique?

I grew up going to Devil’s Thumb Ranch. It is just down the street from the home my grandparents built in Granby, CO, after my Grandfather became sick and could no longer travel. They built it with the hope that family and friends would use it to visit them and it would be a place to gather and celebrate. Devil’s Thumb was always a place that served for special occasions and beautiful, nearby hikes. It became equally special to my husband, Drew. We love hiking around the area and ending the day with a glass of wine on the restaurant’s deck. Before we were even engaged, Drew had already reached out to DTR to see what dates they had open for summer 2019. He knew that it was the only option. We did not look at any other venues and had Devil’s Thumb locked in for Labor Day just two days after our engagement. Having all of our family and friends in a place that is so special to us and being able to share that with them was incredible!

Tell us about the gown and where/how you found it!

The gown is Romona Keveza. I found it at Felice Bridal. It was the last dress I tried on there. I was deciding between two strapless gowns but something just did not feel right. The associate said there was one dress that they had just gotten in that day and she still had not seen it on anyone. It was the same as one of the strapless gowns I had tried on, but in a different cut that I had been liking on other dresses. I put it on and knew it was the one. I love that dress SO much!

What were some touches added to make the wedding personal?

For our ceremony, we had Drew’s Uncle, who everyone lovingly refers to as “H”, officiate the ceremony. We wanted to be married by someone who we personally knew and someone who knew our relationship from day one. He killed it. It was the perfect combination of love, religion, humor, and personal touches. We had my Grandmother, who first introduced me to Devil’s Thumb, do a blessing, which included how we truly believe that we were meant to be together, and Drew’s sisters did a reading. It was so special to have people who we love so much be a part of our marriage. Some other fun touches we did were personalized cocktail napkins with fun facts about the couple, Alex (a HUGE Elvis fan who got third place in an Elvis impersonation contest in 3rd Grade) walked down the aisle to Can’t Help Falling in Love, we brought the outdoors in with beautiful ivy hanging all over the beams inside the reception, and had a 12 piece band that kept everyone on their feet all night!

What was the most memorable part of the day?

The entire day I was so worried that it was going to rain. The weather had been beautiful up until that day and, of course, Saturday was the only day where rain threatened. You can see in a lot of the pictures how ominous the clouds look. There were a few drops during our first look and bridal party photos before the ceremony, but nothing crazy. In the middle of our ceremony, right when we started saying our vows, it started to rain. It was not a rain that makes you want to run inside or that will even get you super wet. It was a few heavy, scattered drops, but nothing more. I felt like, at that moment, my Grandfather, and all our other loved ones who are no longer with us, were there and making their presence known. It was comforting and peaceful. Looking into the man I love’s eyes and reciting our personal vows with this overwhelming sense of love was truly remarkable.

The amount of small world connections that Drew and I have made it clear that we were meant to meet one way or another. Drew is from Lake Forest, IL and Alex is from Denver, CO. Drew moved to Denver for a job, not knowing anyone but his sister and an old friend from high school. That old friend turned out to be the boyfriend (now fiance) of Alex’s lifetime best friend (and maid of honor) and introduced them only two weeks after Drew moved to Colorado. Once the two met, they were immediately inseparable and knew that something was different. Alex’s best friend from college was also from Lake Forest, IL, and Drew’s sister used to babysit her growing up. Both were bridesmaids in the wedding. Drew needed to sublet his apartment in Chicago after moving to Denver. Alex’s friend from high school had just moved to Chicago and was looking for a room, so she ended up subletting from Drew. After 4 years of dating, Drew and Alex decided that they were going to combine Christmas with both their families that year and everyone was invited to celebrate in Avon, CO, where Drew’s parents live. On a snowy morning walk overlooking the mountains, Drew got down on one knee and proposed with his Grandmother’s (and Great Grandmother’s!) ring. The surprises continued as Drew had planned for Alex’s best friends and grandparents to drive up to the house shortly after. We ended the night with a snow cat ride to Beano’s Cabin in Beaver Creek where we celebrated!

What made the wedding special and unique?

We were blessed with summer weather in November. The Central Coast is typically chilly and overcast, but our entire wedding week was in the 80’s! It was the one thing we couldn’t plan, and the sunshine made the overall mood feel even more celebratory. We had the most gorgeous autumn sunset on our wedding night, a true cotton candy sky!

Tell us about the gown and where/how you found it!

Right when I got home from Hawaii, my mom and sister came to visit me in LA. My sister surprised me with a few dress appointments she’d made for fun, but I had no intention of actually finding my wedding dress that day! Of course it wound up being at the first place we went to. I’ve always loved Oscar de la Renta because of his Spanish flair and I instantly fell in love with the beading and silk faille train on mine. It was definitely a bit impulsive considering we didn’t have a date set or a venue, but it all worked out perfectly!

What were some touches added to make the wedding personal?

Jeff and I have different religious backgrounds, but we still wanted to keep the wedding tradition of doing something together to unite us at the end of the ceremony. We decided to do a “Unity Drive” since our ceremony was on a driving range in Pebble Beach. It was a fun surprise for our guests and something that will always be unique to us. We still can’t believe we both managed to hit our drives wearing a tuxedo and a wedding gown!

What was the most memorable part of the day?

Sharing our vows! Jeff’s were so funny and thoughtful, hearing his was my favorite part!

Tell us how you met and became engaged.

Jeff and I met on a dance floor at a will.i.am concert! There was chemistry the night we met, but we didn’t start dating until 6 years later. He proposed last December at one of our favorite places in Hawaii!
